Clean your damn computers!
    #4206283 - 05/22/05 10:42 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Like many of you I've had my inbox flooded with German propoganda thanks to the Sober virus. It's scheduled to go active again tomorrow so I can look forward to receiving hundreds more of these stupid e-mails. For the love of god people clean your computers! If you don't use antivirus software please download and run Symantec's Sober Removal Tool. Tell all your lazy, non-antivirus-having friends to do the same. You can bet that I and many others deluged with this junk will do everything we can to get the infected boxes dropped by their ISPs. Don't get caught up in this mess, make sure your computer is virus free!

Yeah or WebTV or an iToaster. But if you actually want to get stuff done just get a real computer and some antivirus software.

spyware removal is just important, spyware can contail viruses or cause identity theft

try spybot and use adaware as backup to that

Here is an excellant, unlimited use, free antivirus for Windows http://www.avast.com/
I use Linux and avoid the hassle myself.

Or install a *n?x flavor.

Then you can get twice as much done, without any nags, and a nice warm feeling inside for sticking it to the man.

Even cheaper, norton antivirus; they hand it out for free at frys sometimes. Even if you buy norton antivirus, you can install in on your computer at the office, home, laptop. Then when you install it has no record of your yearly sign up date for the year of upgrades for virus definitions. So you can install the software whenever you want, as many times as you could ever want, each time with a year of free downloads.

So if you get this right, you can uninstall the software each year and reinstall it like you just bought the next edition until they no longer support the virus definitions for that version; as in this case I am under the impression that this almost never happens due to there monopoly over the virus protection circuit with the manufacturing sector thus requiring them to provide virus definition for there customers regardless of verison due to the extremely large customer volume they serve.

Windows is as much as an operating system as Linux or any UNIX distros.

I never get viruses because I never open anything that I'm not sure of.

Common sense is my anti-virus.

I agree with the last post completely. Even though I am a linux convert of about nine months now, I never had any major problems with windows, thanks to some common sense and safety measures (i.e. firewall + protowall).

AVG antivirus is also free, and Zone Alarm (free edition)
no good reason not to .

I've always found that I got nothing done in Linux, and that Windows suits me 100%. I really don't see what Windows doesn't offer. It's a fine platform.

I used to be you, VoidsOfsPg.

My anti virus was common sense.

Now I can get really fuckered and open all the mail and attachments I want - because they just won't run

But I never cared about that, 'cause I have that common sense anti-virus.  So I forced myself to use and see what all this linux noise was about.

Years later, I much much much much much much much prefer using linux to Windows.  I don't even like how opensource programs like Firefox behave on windows compared to my completely personalized linux setup

I agree completely. It's not just about security either. Any regular computer user can benefit from running a real OS, providing that they have the patience to go through with the switch. It takes some time, but it's well worth it.

A usable command line. Once you get used to it, the command line
is really an easier way to do almost anything. I always hated macs
until OS X came out, now that I can install fink and get a workable
unix environment with X it's a really nice platform.

Then there's things like virtual desktops (no the powertool doesn't count, it sucks hard), file systems that don't need defragging, thousands of quality free software packages installable with a simple
apt-get install package command, virtual consoles so you can have multiple people logged in at the same time WITH GUI. Maybe you see now why I find it next to impossible to do any work in windows?
