slow
    #4209666 - 05/23/05 01:03 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Ive just got a few questions regarding my procedures.

Ive had 4 BRF jars incubating for over 2 weeks and myc growth seems slow, just a few patches. Im a patient man to be sure, but Im curious how I may improve.

here are a few factors that i think may be contributing to slow growth
please comment on or debunk any of these --

-when starting the jars, making the substrate I found that I had bought the chunkier vermiculite, would this slow tings?

-I used filtered water rather than pure water

-jars are now in a TiT incubator but for the first 2 days they were in temps less than 21deg- (I had to get the materials and for the TiT) and temp fluctuates from around 24 - 27 deg in the incubator

-tape still covering the holes - does there need to be any air release etc?

- I notice water drops on the inside of the jars- is this OK? no water seems to pool at the bottom but would flipping the jars help?

many thanks!

From what I know the Chunky is Good because it gives the mycellium room to network through rather then really fine verm it would sorta turn to mush!

-I used filtered water rather than pure water
Not really a big factor I dont think...see a guy use POND WATER on this forum somehwere

-jars are now in a TiT incubator but for the first 2 days they were in temps less than 21deg- (I had to get the materials and for the TiT) and temp fluctuates from around 24 - 27 deg in the incubator
Just try and keep temps up near 82-86...sorry im from canada and dont use celcuis

-tape still covering the holes - does there need to be any air release etc?
REMOVE TAPE! sometimes it can work better but remove them! As long as you have the TOP DRY VERM LAYER youur fine from contams gettn in!

- I notice water drops on the inside of the jars- is this OK? no water seems to pool at the bottom but would flipping the jars help?
HAppens to me and YEs you should flip it....Change the c02 level

Hope that helps

When You fill your jars at the Start!

LOOSELY Fill yur jars and then add your dry layer of VERM!
DO NOT SHAKE!
shaking will cause big problems la8r on.. You DRY verm will mix with the Side's and shit wont grow even!
When you shake it will sorta compress the mixture inside aswell as mix your DRY with WET

BRF-no shakey
Grains-Shakey :poke:

You dont shake BRF couldcity, you only do that when using a substrate like Rye Berries or WBS.

-I am a newb-

My BRF jars just finish a few days ago now. It took around 4 weeks for them to finish. I had very slow growth as well. I had my temps around 23 at first.. then finally made a TiT with a fish tank heater. Wow.. that constant 84 degrees kicks butt. Oh, I added a CPU fan to my TiT to make the temps more even.. that is a good addition.

I had tape on my holes as well (the breatheable kind) but still.. from what I read.. and limited experience.. take the tape off. I was afraid of contams.. so I used a coffee filter over the top with a rubberband to keep it in place.

I used really really extra small verm.. and my growth was really slow. So I am starting to think that the growth time does not really change that much with different size verm. Some people say small is much faster.. but plenty people say that it is not. Then I hear medium is best.. and No, only use big. So it really seems to be personal preference. Maybe ask Roadkill, Diver, Agar.. or some other expert.

Ok hope that helps some. But keep in mind I am only a few weeks ahead of you..

Good luck man

Missed your water drops question. I have the drops as well. From what I understand that is not a problem. It has not been for me. I have small drops everywhere as well.. so I don't think you need to worry. But pools would be bad.
