my dog suddenly learned to howl
    #4209358 - 05/23/05 10:41 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

My dog is almost 16 years old now, and never, ever, have I heard him howl. He's whimpered, whined, barked, scuffed, all that, but never let out a long howl before. This weekend I had to take him to a kennel for a couple days while I was out of town, and upon his return, suddenly he's learned to howl. Note this is not the first time he went to a kennel either, he's been there at least 20-30 times in the past. I'm not quite sure what to make of the strange outcome.

not to freak you out or anything, but it kind of makes me wonder if maybe he was harmed while he was in the kennel??

I know you said he had been in there before, but maybe there was some sort of incident?  He doesn't seem to be hurt of anything, correct?  That is certainly strange

That's what I'm afraid of, or possibly just traumatization from being in such a stressful environment (locked up in a cage, in a strange place, around tons of other howling barking dogs), since hes very old, nearing the end of his life, etc., I wonder if he just got to the point where howling was the extreme of anxiety. I gave him as much love as I could upon returning, rubbed his back belly legs head and neck, shook him real good and stuff, and found no reason to believe any physical harm done at all. Being old, he is very fragile and gets hurt easily these days, so if there were something to be found he'd be whimpering about it without a doubt. The kennel I took him to has always been very good as well, the people that run it are great people, the workers seem very careful with animals, and I've never heard of any incidents occuring there, so I suspect no malpractice was involved. Just very strange.

you sound like you're a very responsible pet owner, and its awesome that you always bring him to the same place, with people you trust. Hopefully its just the stress, like you said...and him getting older.

he doesnt like the kennel anymore - for whatever reason. I'd avoid taking him there as much as possible considering he'll only be around for a short while (given his age). Dude should be chilling out in his own dog retirement with the people he loves (you).

See you can teach an old dog new tricks. He probably just picked it up from the other dogs in the kennel howling their heads off. I know I wouldn't like to be in a kennel if I was a dog, I'd howl about it too. But tell dude I said what's up dog.

He also howls to Dylan playing one on CD, but not to Popper at all.

yeah, hopefully that will be the last time I have to take him there. we just couldnt find anyone to watch him for the weekend, so we had to :| but you're right, he's def. too old to be hanging out in the kennel with all the other cracked out dogs. i'd imagine itd be like taking the elderly to a noisy day care center rather than a nursing home.

my friends male dog pisses like a female dog, without lifting its leg... then one day his dog met my dog and for that one and only moment, it lifted its leg to piss.. weird
