Curious about these little blue mushrooms (pics)
    #4209298 - 05/23/05 10:09 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hi guys,
I live in the south part of the south island, New Zealand...I've found these shrooms a few times before but today was the first time I've had a cam with me. I don't think they're psilocybe genus, but was thinking maybe a conocybe or something like that. I didn't get a spore print, but could always go get one if needed.

-Habitat: Growing in pine bark mulch each time I found them.
-Gills: White in young specimens, tan in mature specimens
-Size: 3-6cm tall, cap 7-15mm when mature
-Stem: Is of an almost transluscent nature, whitish grey to brown, with some fuzz. Often with blue tints especially at base.
-Cap: Tightly conical when young, opening out to wide bell shaped when mature. Caps ranging from blue-tan-white-grey in younger specimens, turning to smokey brown or tan when mature.

They were growing in troops of 50-100, often with some very blue aborts curled around underneath big bits of pine bark. Can anyone help out with the ID of these ones?

Might very well be active- not familliar with NZ sp. Very nice description though. I wish more people would follow your lead. Suprised I haven't seen more response to this thread.

well this is certainly a fantastic find.

they appear to be an active species of Psilocybe.

i am unsure of which species
maybe mjshroomer will know..

in the meantime, +5mushroom rating for this topic.

awesome find.

When you first posted I wanted to say that it could very well be an active species, but I didn't want to misguide you. Nice finds though.

I've picked a lot of liberty caps before of many shapes and sizes and I can say for sure that they are not liberty caps...libs only grow in grass usually in a sheep paddoc (we have a lot of those here), or occasionally on rugby fields (we have a lot of those here too, haha). I'm pretty sure they need that grass roots to cling to.

These grow only in pine bark. Not even in pine chip, it has to be bark. I'll go grab one for a print tonight or tommorow. Maybe some more pics too.

IMO they are way too blue to be semilanceata i have never seen any pics of them that blue before. but I dont think the substrate is the determining factor in identification. I have found subaeruginosa growing from many different substrates including kangaroo shit and moss

hi there zee_werp, nice find.

yeah these look like the shrooms I picked from bark mulch near that spot we checked out last year. I just assumed that they were liberties until later when I was like "wait, growing from mulch?!". A friend and I ate about 100 each, which I would've called a mild-medium strength dose, definitely psilocybian.

So, they are NOT liberties: wrong substrate and not as potent. But what then? Ps. pelliculosa? In NZ? Or something else? I doubt they are native, due to the fact they grow from pine mulch, which are not a native NZ species.

Any chance of some habitat shots there zee_werp?

THOSE ARE NOT ACTIVE

Can't remember what they are called but I saw them in a field guide before. They are edible, but not active and don't taste very good.

He said they bioessayed them and they contained psilocybin. They have many many features which DO suggest they are of the Psilocybe genus.

looks like active psilocybes to me.
and woodlivers eh? could prove an interesting cultivation prospect. get some prints, for SURE somebody here would be happy to isolate them. they actually remind me of tiny weiliis basically they look more like the cearulescent psilocybes than the cyan/azure-like complexes you normally find in new zealand.

I am similarly puzzled Mitchnast - notice how the blue is more prominent on younger specimens, which is true of some of the strikingly turqoise-ish Australasian species of Mycena (like Mycena interrupta) many of which which are woodlovers.

Spore print vital. Cool find.
