Sex in the Media

I am not sure if this is the right forum for this. I posted it in here because the things we are exposed to in the media could theoretically fall under the "activism" part of this forum.
I think sex in the media is too prevalent and overt. I am not a prude either. I own porn, like sex, am not very religious, etc...
It just seems as if in every sitcom there are numerous sex jokes, in every movie there is an unnecessary sex scene, in every media format there is excessive sexual imagery or innuendo. It is actually kind of a turn off to me and I am repelled and embarrassed when I see it. Also, it really bothers me that young children are being exposed to this stuff.

Examples please. Have you ever watched foreign television? Things I've seen from Japan and Europe have a lot more sexual content than the US equivalent.

Times change..
But I do agree, Sex is now infused into the media, sitcoms, and even cartoons....
But they media also shows death and destruction and feeds you lies and doesn't tell you the things you should know...
Big brother sucks, and I agree...
It all comes to this.
Lose some civil liberties or deal with it...
Guns kill people...or is it people kill people?
Let's make new laws so that it's almost possiable to arm yourself.
Sex is now just a big joke. and isn't taken seriously how it use to be...
Teenagers fucking...
It's not really about the media as much as parenting...But i'm not a parent so I know keeping your kids in line is tough, but if parents weren't such dead beats then i'm sure we wouldn't be so goddamn worried...

Oh yea
A friend of mine from Croatia (sp?) made a great point...
He came to the U.S and was shocked at how many young people wanted to get fucked up and drink..He said where he's from, it's not illegal, you can drink whenever you want, ect ect..
My theory is when you begin to slap down laws b/c of something You can control but choose not to, you instil Rebelious emotions from those you made the laws against..
IT makes sense, no wonder America is full of so many deaths caused by Over dosing, Guns...Whatever...
America is going to from from the inside out - Some Republician

There are such contradictions in American society. There is a strong vein of conservatism amongst a large segment of the population, yet there is overt sexual stuff in the media.
I was not really addressing the affects of sex in the media, I was more expressing my distaste for the current level of it. It seems more awkward and shrill than it does arousing.

Yea, I agree, But I wouldn't want my five year old daughter to be around anything like that, it's mainly about parenting, Can't always be around, but when you are, you should do your fucking job and talk to ur kid, try and hang with em and not be a deadbeat, Parents that are never around - It sucks

yet there is overt sexual stuff in the media.
Are you just expressing your opinion or are you stating some government action should be taken?

You know, it's funny. I was doing a group presentation for this one class on the movie "All Quiet On The Western Front." It's made in the early 1930's. There's a sex scene in there. I mean, it doesn't show sex, but it implies it. Three guys are swimming in the river when they see these three French girls on the other side. They're arguing amongst themselves saying stuff like "I've got that one," or "She's mine." Then they go inside, and the next scene is in a bedroom. They don't show anyone, but you see the shadow of the bed against the wall, and there's pillow talk.
So you see, sex in the media isn't a new thing. It's a little more explicit now, but not as much as it is over in Europe. I personally don't understand why we think we need to hide sex from children. In some ways it makes it all the more mysterious and intriguing for them.

I think there is too little sex in the media. It seems Judeo-Christian values permeate the air. People put way to much importance on sex turning it into some taboo special action.

What I've observed personally in the United States is an abundance of sexual references, while at the same time, puritanical values are endorsed with undertones of "sex is bad." So you have these two ideas clashing in the media. It's like, the idea is presented and then the idea is labelled as taboo. It's like if someone put a fresh piece of chocolate cake right in front of you to eat but told you it is immoral to eat it. I think this causes the fucked up state of sexuality in America. There's a certain sense of perversion and deviance caused by this weird situation, and hangups about nudity and sex are the result.

thats a good point.
Considering there is just about no nudity, American media enjoys teasing you with sex, but never EVER suggesting it explicitly. It's as if you're being egged on by the media to eat the cake, but if you eat it, you're exiled.

I agree, all the sexual content on TV seems to be oppressed, tame and boring. I don't see why anyone but a conservative would think there's too much sex on TV, from what I've seen over in Europe our commercials and television are rather tame.
European commercials don't hesitate to show naked women or nude breasts in quite a few instances I've seen, which really is the way it should be. There's no need to oppress the way our bodies look and behave.

Because sex sells and the more rating these programs have the more money they make so they have to cram a sex scene or reference in just about any programming

We're exact opposites in this respect, my friend. I want to see more sex. Sex is natural.

It's weird....I watch porn and try to get chicks in bed(I'm not always successful with that ). I don't have any hangups about sex in private. But when it is overtly displayed, it just doesn't seem to sit well with me.
Or maybe I am not annoyed at the amount of sex-related stuff in the media, but more at the way that it is presented. It reminds me of a dorky kid who got a laugh out of a joke and then proceeds to tell the same joke for the next five years. It just gets old, awkward, repetitive, and annoying. Some of the posters have a point in their descriptions of the phenomenon. There is a restraint to the offering of sex. Almost like it is being used as a tease because it is taboo. I have always been cynical of the media and little "tricks" like that are stupid.
Maybe I am a prude. I am even uncomfortable with excessive PDA's (public displays of affection). I don't like to see it and I don't want to expose the world to that side of me. It is a private matter in my opinion. I am not bothered by holding hands and giving a kiss in public, but I have seen people passionately making out in public and it is weird. Maybe I am a product of my "repressive puritanical neanderthal American society" . But if I am, why do I like porn and sex before marriage so much?
