Calling all filter patch bag users..
    #420778 - 10/10/01 01:04 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Thanks in advance for any help...

I just recieved 10 filter patch bags from FP. I was wondering what the preffered substrate and sub to water ratio should be. I have straight millet and rye grain on hand, but I have wet spot problems when I use quart jars. I have steeped, presoaked, let sit for a day, you name it.....wet spot every time. Funny thing is that pints work just fine.

What is a good amount of substrate to put in the bag to help prevent wet spot?

After I pull of the filter patch seal, can I reuse the bags another time (I wouldn't see why not?)

Any bag users here, please report on any success or horror stories..thanks again.

Funny you posted that, I just asked about bags maybe five minutes before you. I'm curious about the filter patches. I'd probably order some if I decided to bag it. Let us know how they work. (Or anyone else I guess)

Filter bags work quite well if you can avoid the dreaded wet-spot contams. I've lost several of my bags to this crap plus i think my one rye bag is growing ergot (i will be sure to toss this in the dumpster, unopened)

I believe rye and birdseed can work well in bulk like this but I would recommend steeping first and possibly adding some verm if its too damp. Also make sure you PC for long enough because of the thickness of the substrate in the bag.

Eightball: You pressure cook your bags? This negates one of the most appealing factors of the bag (no pressure cooker) if you follow Hips Bulk Tek here on the site. (Cook in the oven at 250 for 45 min. I think.) Have you tried this?

We carry filter patch bags at about 1/2 the price of FP.
As well as the impulse sealers.

A good substrate is rye grain mixed with a little bit of gypson to help ward of the icky's

I was wondering what the preffered substrate and sub to water ratio should be. I have straight millet and rye grain on hand, but I have wet spot problems <<<<

Try letting it soak over night in a little water and gysom and then set it in a strainer/colonder etc... for 24 hours to allow any extra water to run off.

After I pull of the filter patch seal, can I reuse the bags another time (I wouldn't see why not?)

WHY they are .75 cents or less depending on the size (we carry four sizes)

Thanks for the reply dimitri (or should I say the REAL dimitri211) ;)

I have tried everything you can think of. If it has been mentioned in a mycological community of any form, I gave it a shot. Wet spot every time, even changed my grain sources, water ratio's etc., so that isn't the problem.

Where can I get gypsum (sp?)??

Does the gypsum function as a PH adjuster... and if so, is that an influence on wet spot contams???

WHY NOT reuse the bags if they are reusable? Do you always throw out valuable things?? (Hey 75 cents could feed a starving raghead...you too can breathe the life of allah back into a future Osama sock puppet :))

Is it harmul to reuse them.. does the filter withstand mutliple PC's ???

Thanks for help...BTW I am a satisfied customer of the LIL' shop.... thanks guys, great service, great product..../popeil mode off

One other thing... your site kicks ass... really, it is well done. Pat yourself on the back. A little constructive critcism.... lose the forced full screen mode, it's annoying as well as none of my buisness ;)

Where can I get gypsum (sp?)??<<<<

Most garden stores carry it, it is used as a soil additive to help sweetin the soil(pH adjustment)

It does not, that I know of, help with wet spot mold (but look into this further)

WHY NOT reuse the bags if they are reusable?
I tried to reuse fp bags that I got from FP and they all went to hell the second time I tried to use them I now have a bulk supplier who guarentees there bags to be the highest quality made and I will be testing them and will pass that info along as I get it.

Try to reuse them just use less substrate in case it does not work less to clean up:)

Is it harmul to reuse them.. does the filter withstand mutliple PC's ???<<<

I can see no harm in trying, they are tuff and durable and the worst thing that could happen is that it might not work:mad:

We also carry presterilized rye. In bags for those who do not have a PC:D

The whole site is being redone with about 50 more items and the surfer will have a choice of flash or html hoping to make it easier for all users not just ones that support a flash player.

Thanks for the compliment.

As of yet my original question remains unanswered....

What amount of substrate v. H20 should my bags get. Should I just exponentially increase the normal TMC ratio or will that result in water content problems??

I measure out 4 quart jars worth of grain and 3 1/2 quarts of water and 1 teaspoon of gypsom and I have never had wet spot at all. I now use smaller bags the are 18 in long by 4 in wide and I use for them 4 pint jars of rye 3 1/2 pints water and a little gypsom.

I use filter patch bags, and to avoid wet spots, I gently tumble my substrate around almost daily after myc has established. Never had a problem.
