Do I really need to pasturize my horse poop?

I have a crapload of crap. Processed by horses.
Anywho
I was just wondering if anyone has had success, or has had problems with using unpasturized horse crap.
Thx.

What are you talking about "everyone wants to copy it it"? And what if it was that easy, what's the big surprise in that?
Straw needs to be pasteurized without a doubt. I don't see any reason to pasteurize horse poo for the application of P. Cubensis. To each his own though, if it makes you feel safer by following the invisible rules of pasteurization and cleanliness, then whatever.

Damn, well if Diver doesn't do it
I DONT DO IT!!
I'll see if this shite works. . .
BTW, I've been finding shroom mycelium on some of these horse craps lately. I think I need to kill off the mycelium in case its bad stuff. Damn.. Guess I'll pasturize for like 45 mins or so.

Yes, Diver is having success without pasteurizing first. You can always try. It doesn't get pasteurized in nature. However, as Agar told me, you might wind up raising a knat farm. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

It's cool Ohmatic. Hey Hippiechick, yes I've had bugs crawling all over the place, not to mention seeds sprouting. But once mycelium takes over, everything else disappears. Bugs are present, but not a problem so far.
I don't have enough test runs to confidently say "Hey, this works 100%!" so until then, I'd say pasteurization is the safest route.

I have about 2 pounds of WBS colonized by PESA.
Hmmm. . . Diver, what % would u say you've had success with? 90% of the time?

Unpasteurized results up until now: 1 tray of Shaggy Mane and two 5 pound trays of various cubensis strains. Furthest I've gone is 3rd flush on any of these. I usually pitch at 3rd flush anyways, so that's the furthest I'd expect anything to make it anyways. 100% results so far. Not a lot of test data so far, but enough for me.

well, to kill unwanted pests would be one reason . pasteurization and sterilization increase the odds of success, for another. the object is to get rid of competing orginizums, so the mycelia that you do want to grow has a better chance.
most people don't get substrate strait from the horse's ass .

I simply stated "I don't see any reason to pasteurize horse poo for the application of P. Cubensis."
I didn't say "I don't see what pasteurization accomplishes."
In other words, I'm well aware of what pasteurization achieves.

Uhhh.. Diver. Isn't h-poo mostly straw anyway?? I mean if straw NEEDS to be pasturized.. then wouldn't it be a rule that h poo needs to be pasturized??

If quality h/poo is well weather, but still has intact nuggets (high fiber texture) & has been sun dried (hot - direct sunlight)for extended periods of time (like all of a hot summer).
It is in a way dry heat & UV cleansed of a lot of nasties it could contain - otherwise.
However, if it contains viable bacteria, mold spores, endospores, larva or eggs of any little critters that can withstand all that. Odds are, once the h/poo is hydrated with moisture & placed in incubation temps, they will gerinate/hatch.
That is not to say - h/poo MUST be pasturized, or sterilized.
Pasturizing - just increase's your odds that, any nasties are KILLED, prior to spawning.
I have dry baked shredded h/poo @ 195F overnight (beware of smoking h/poo) & had it work. But, it is a FIRE HAZARD.
STILL, as a RULE OF THUMB..... for the sake of NOT WASTING the expense, materials, effort, time & labor involved, I WOULD WET PASTURIZE H/POO.
Try it both ways, let us know your results.

I'm gonna pasturize some right now, I think I might try not pasturizing later on. . .
It would suck to have the poo have mold/endospores in it
