 ok im getting warmer

yesterday was the first hot day after a big rain here, so i went to a cow feild and searched under every cow pie, there were alot. among all these pies i turned over one to see if there was any mycelium and i saw 2 pins. im pretty sure it was cubensis because it just looked like a tiny cubensis cap with the coloring. anyways should i go back the next day and expect them to be full grown? and does this mean the feild will have more mushrooms in general?

Yes. Today is going to be awesome for hunting, where do you live?
It rained a tiny bit yesterday, and a decent amount friday, so today(sunday) is going to be quite nice for hunting. If the field yields well today, you can be fairly sure it'll yield in the future. Mushrooms can fully mature in 24 hours, but I like to go the night(evening) at least 24 hours after a nice rain. Since it rained friday evening and a little saturday, sunday will be VERY nice to go out and pick.

i live in greenville sc, so its only like 75-80 degrees outside, i hope thats hot enough

Shrooms grow in places like the NE and oregon and stuff where they're lucky to get 75+ degrees, you should be fine.

yeah i went out today walking my dog and i found so many shrooms...i wanted to grab them up but i did not have my pack, bags, pen, paper, or camera so i just let them sit there...
they should be there tommorrrow when i go for another walk

UNDER the pies? Seriously? DAMN it! I'v read all the basic FAQ's... how did I miss this? I assumed they usually grew out of the top of the pie. Is this why i'v found nothing on any of my trips?

same here, but someone on here said to look under for pins, and i did look under one every now and then and one happend to have them

its best to leave the cow pies alone , look under neath 1 or 2 maybee but flipping them over is virtually destroying the mycelial networks that have grown to produce shrooms you can easily kill the shrooms and they might not grow now

Very true. Pin-heads do usually start underneath the paddies, but the full grown cubes are well above the surface. The mycelium actually connects itself to the grass. I dont know if this is just some defense mechanism against weather, bugs, etc., or crucial to production. Id let them be.
Also, many shrooms can look like cubes when at the pin stage, especially some Coprinus species that frequent cow dung. you can tell them apart because the baby inkys are usually very numurous, always grow directly on top of the manure, and have skinny stems. The cube pins are generally larger and have some what of a reddish-orangish cap and bright white stem (the cap and stem are also sometimes frosted white by mycelium, depending on strain and growth conditions).

what do pins look like- nubs, or spots sometimes.
my field has been pissing me off.. its gotten over grown.. waist high in tall grasses. humidity has been low so far this year.. found one mushie out there so far :\

is this a pin or the mushroom u found. if thats a pin, can u eat that? or do u have to wait for it to fully grow?

that is a fully grown Psilocybe cubensis my friend. Pin-heads look like they sound, like pin-heads. The size varies considerably from shroom to shroom, but they are generally no more than 1 in. high (thats a large pin). The cap and stem are the same width. the cap is acutely convex, more like a rounded off, brown colored knub than a cap.
