Help me solve this math problem
#4205157  05/22/05 12:59 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

so i've been going over it for a long time, trying to figure it out, i know the answer, as it's in the back of the book, but i need to know how to solve the damn thing.... it's a word problem.
anyway, here goes
Bob drove from home to work at 50mph. After work, the traffic was heavier, and he drove home at 45 mph. his driving time to and from work was 1 hour 16 minutes. How far does he live from his job.
i'm going to hold back the answer, untill it get's solved, so it wont influence anyone's work...
normaly i would just skip this problem, but i'm looking at the quiz, and thier's the exact same question, with different numbers... it's hella lame... cause i've gone over it like 15 times trying to figure out a working 'time'

Hmm...I'd say (but I could be wrong here) 63.3 miles. I got that by:
50miles [distance in an hour] + ((50 / 60 [distance in a minute] ) * 16 ) = 63.3333
Sound about right?

How did you fit that thing in the pub (your Saturday night cerebrum, that is)?
 if(human==autoPart){
for(i=1;i<infinity;i++){
getBorn(mind,soul);
getEdu(mind,soul);
getJob(mind,soul);
retire(mind,soul);
die(mind,soul);
}
}

Heh! Thanks, but it's really not that hard. When you get up to Calculus, I'm totally lost...

I'm going to put it off as long as possible (calc). As long as it can be used for evil, though....
 if(human==autoPart){
for(i=1;i<infinity;i++){
getBorn(mind,soul);
getEdu(mind,soul);
getJob(mind,soul);
retire(mind,soul);
die(mind,soul);
}
}

I got 30 miles.
x/50 + x/45 = 76/60 10x/450 + 9x/450 = 76/60 19x/450=76/60 1140x=34200 x=30

to convert minutes into hours, you have to remember to divide by 60 1 hour and 16 minutes = 60/60 + 16/60

it would be 76 minutes. If your speed was given in miles per minute, that would be fine, but since the speed is mph, your time needs to be in hours so that the units cancel out.

the whole basis of my calculations was x/50 + x/45 = 76. But apparently the /60 was where i fucked up... and i think i realize why it didnt work, cause i was doing mph to mp minute...

1 hour 16 min = 76x60 = 4560sec
50 mph = 22.35200 m/s 45 mph = 20.1168 m/s
(22.35200 * X) + (20.1168 * X) = 4560s
/20.1168
(1.11111111 * X) + (X) = 226.676211s
2.11111111 X = 226.676211s
/2.11111111
X = 107.372942 s
bla bla, math sucks
