Cryonics -- Life Extension
    #4204193 - 05/21/05 06:45 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

What do you guys think of this? I'm doing a presentation for school and just wanted some information on what some peoples views are on life extension. Do you think it's morally wrong to live forever? If you are religious, how does you're religion view it and would something like this interfere with religion if it does work? If you have a strong belief in God, do you think that it is only God's job to decide on whether or not you should live and that it is wrong for humans to take on this responsibility? Also, if Cryonics does work, how do you think it will affect the future society/world?
If you had the chance to get Cryopreserved, would you want to do it?
You may choose only one
Yes
No

You can freeze the body, but can you freeze consciousness?

scifi novels have examined many aspects of the corpsicle effect...

are you going for a liquid helium preservation after clinical death(& a hoped for revival) or something less extreme? (like prep a living patient and drop body core temp to 4 deg C & keep 'em there for decades...)anyways, upon rescicitation, are you assuming that the tech of a future society will have pysical immortality in this original organic birth-body, freely available to all & granting a worthwhile lifespan measured in millenia or longer?
or some sorta cyber-suvival as a silicon download?
or something else?

Wow I'm the only one who's said Yes so far :smirk:

If someone gave me the chance, and I didn't have to pay for it, I would say definitely.

Why not? You'll be dead anyway...not like you are going to care if your body is rotting in the ground or frozen solid.

Then there's always the off chance that the idea actually works! You could wake up hundreds of years into the future. Even if immortality isn't possible when they wake you up, you'll still have the rather unique experience of getting to live in two entirely different time periods.

You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

I voted No just because there are to many unknown implications. If consciousness goes on, am I tied to this body in someway while it's frozen or revived and do I have to come back to it?

I thought of this one yesterday too. What if some sicko techno race of the future revives you and uses you for torturous testing experiments or as a slave or something awful. There is no way of knowing the quality of life you would be revived back into.

Here's another strange one, everyone you know now and take for granted, family and friends, would be gone from the face of the earth. You would have zero meaningful ties to the people of the time you were revived in....no parents, siblings, best friends from your school days who have stood through the test of time with you.

There's a lot to think about and consider.

.
Just think tho Jiggy, if your DNA was sampled and cloned into everyone because you had the last of the "good" genes frozen away (due to "cellular mutations" and/or "genetic replication errors" and such thru time), somehow you would end up with some kind of deeper awareness/conscious "control" over those people you were part of....     Now THAT could come in handy....

Food for thought....  I dunno~ if I would do it....    But if you think about time not being constant, you being frozen would only be perceived as a blink in relative time vs. consciousness....  Crazy shit...!       I like...!

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Yeah that was my point too. If consciousness does separate from the body at death, and this happens while the body is frozen, the body would re-awaken braindead. So why bother?
