grow bags
    #4203812 - 05/21/05 04:55 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

i know they may seem lame to you "veterans", but i was wondering if anyone here has used a grow bag? i figured it'd be a little easier, give me a little confidence before i got into the more complex stuff. i was going to case it after i had 100% but the damn bag fermented, maybe, or some kind of contam. any ideas, or should i just forget about them? Thanks

A "grow bag" with what in it?

Assuming you mean rye, or wbs in a filter/patch bag.

Sure, you can get a few shrooms by using one.

But, "new" folks often inspect/eyeball/fondle them to death.

Best results come from placing a multi-spore inoculated filter/patch grain bag inside a container (plastic or hvy duty cardboard that light cannot shine through) that is the same size as the bag diameter, & incubated around 80F - constant.

Let it colonize 20%, then gently fondle/manipulate bag to spread colonized grains throughout it, place it back in box...AND LEAVE IT ALONE.

Don't eyeball, peer, poke, fondle, look - constantly.

Once bag is 100% (+) colonized, open box top & expose content to 12/12 light on a daily basis.

It should begin to form primordia, pins, then fruits.

Once you see fruits & they get fair sized, (in clean enviro) cut open bag close to bag top, harvest, mist with sterile water & reseal with tape (then hope for a second flush).

Most newbies inspect, eyeball, poke, fondle a bag TO DEATH.

In the right conditions, it will do it's thing, if you let it.

You talking for SPAWN alone(to spawn bulk sub), or to grow/fruit in?

It differs & there are a few tricks.

:EDITTED TO ADD:

For spawn alone, I would use a combo of wbs, finch seed & rye. That mix is more forgiving, if the moisture content is a wee bit off (to start). For inoculating with an LC, I would drain the grain/seed mix a full hour, before bagging up, 2/3rds full, seal & PC a full 120 minutes. Then allow PC to cool at least a full hour before removing the bags from PC. Once cooled to room temp, I would inoculate each bag with 5 ml of good thick LC. Incubate in total darkness @ 80F. Manipulate bags once @ 20% colonization, to spread out colonized grain mix.

For fruiting in bags, I would do a mix of the same grain combo mixed with 50% weathered h/poo (well rinsed) & a cup of chunky verm (moisture hand squeezed until it only drips a few drops - with a gentle - but firm squeeze). Fill bags ? full, then same as above (except I would add a ml or 2 more of LC - when inoculating).

For fruiting bags, once 20% colonized, manipulate bag to spread colonization & form bag content into a paddy in bag bottom, giving it more flat surface area on top, rather than a mound, or ball.

Just soak WBS..... rye I would soak, then steep (very mild simmer) in hot water.

I recently tried spawn bags for the first time. I used multispore inoculation of Taz 2.5cc per bag 12 bags because I expected some contaims. I used about 3/4 of a pound cracked corn soaked 24h and steeped 25-30mins then well rinsed with hot water to remove all the starch then strained for 45 mins(my spawn of choice in qt jars)that was put into double bagged Reynold oven bags with a tyvek filter patch near the top of each. The bags were impulse sealed inner bag first then outer bag then both bags together at the very top. I pced them at 15psi for 1 hour wrapped in a towel 3 at a time. I used every precaution when inoculating glove box, alcohol wipes on injection sites taped over holes as needle was coming out flamed needle tip before and after each injection fresh commercial needle opened in glovebox and still got sighs of green mold in every bag the the mycelia is growing strong. the mold seemed to come from the top of the bags maybe from the filter patch not sure but Lucky I got to return my impulse sealer and make some LC so I am not really out much money like $10 at most seems like way to much hassle I think I search for some 2 qt canning jars
