Found these in a pine forest. I think they're Gymnopilus Spectabilis.
a. Habitat : Pine forest, in rank grasses out of rich soil, an on pinus radiata stumps. b. Gills : Yellowish gills close to crowded c. Cap Size : average was around 8-10cm. d. Stem Char. : Yellow, brownish/orangish partial veil on stem, thick and pretty sure theyre solid e. Cap Char. : Yellowy/ orangey, kind of scaley, i think conical/convex. f. Sporeprint : Orange g. Bruises : no bruising h. Scent : Mushroomy

Looks like they may be. Do a search, there have been very detailed threads on Gymnopilus spectabilis.

Australia is a little weirder than other countries with gyms. You will find some mushrooms that look identical and very much like spectablis that do not stain blue and others that go a slight greenish. I always try to stear away from them. There is a great photo by adrian from earthpod on his website:www.shaman-australis.com/ and click on earthpod.

Be sure to check for any differences between the ones shown in the first two photos to the comparison of the ones in the last photo. There is clear difference. This difference must be reconized and understood for proper identifications.

Whoa... those are some beautiful gyms. Nice find!
It's been a year since that find so I would go check that spot again if I were you.

We have one out here that has passed for years as Spectabilis.....the inactive G. ventricosus
Gyms are dangerous to mess with.......dont ever eat a Gym that doesnt distinctly bruise blue or just better yet dont eat them at all
we do have others here that are without a doubt active

your right - most finds in Australia are G. ventricosus - the middle photo looks like spectabilis but it may not be. Either way ive only ever found one specimen taht stained at all green - whereas Gymnopilus purp. stains readily blue and Ferret often finds them.

Give Gym 2-4 hours to blue. The last active gyms I found took about that long to blue. And it's not really bluing, they turn green because yellow + blue = green.
I've tried 4 species of active mushrooms. Gyms are definately at the bottom of the list in terms of an enjoyable trip =\

Really?
I find a gym trip to be extremely pleasant and joyful, more friendly than other mushies.

My last and only gym trip did ZERO. I went to bed and slept ;( I didnt have many though so its probably my fault. Ive heard some great stories of gym experiences - most probably urban legends but funny all the same.
