Karo, Malt, or Honey for LC and A poo question
    #4200431 - 05/20/05 05:58 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Two questions here. First, I have been using honey for my liquid culture that I buy from a neighbor that sells his fresh honey. It works really well and I have never had a problem with it. However, everyone seems to talk about malt.. and karo.. and rarely about honey. If I am not having a problem with my honey, should I switch to the other stuff? Do they make stronger more potent myc?

Second, I found a 50lb bag of cow poo at my local garden center for $3. Is it worth a shot? I know I have heard that horses kick cow butt.. and that the store bought stuff is usually not as good. But 50 Lbs for $3? I just have a really small place and I have a small incubator.. limited amount of jars... dont want to waste my jars using powerless poo. Oh, the brand is Black Cow Manure. Anyone have any experience with that brand?

Thanks very much for your advice and help.

I've used honey for a long time and have never found a reason to switch. A 5% solution of honey in water has always produced great results for me. Within one week of injecting 1 cc of spores, I can get 200 ML of honey water to colonize almost completely. That's enough for ten 20 CC syringes or sixteen 12 cc syringes. More liquid culture solution than I know what to do with. I wouldn't waste time with that bagged manure.
