What's All The Hype?

Why does everyone always say a pressure cooker is necessary when steralizing media? I've done about 65 jars total through regular old boiling in a pot of water for 1/2 hour and have never once lost a single jar due to contamination of any sorts..

if you ever move up to using whole grains ( im assuming you are using PF tek BRF etc) then you will find you need a pressure cooker or the mean green sets in.

actually ive used rye the last 2 times and actually had worse results with it than BRF so I went back.. either way Ive never had contams. I supposed If I were to use finch seed I might need a pressure cooker to get the full benefits from it.

A pressure cooker also cuts down on the amount of time you need to sterilize. If you've done fine with boiling, then stick with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

I have seen a few different time amounts concerning pressure cookers. I think I will go with 25 minutes, does that sound right?

you are obviously saying special prayers to gais, (the mushroom goddess) what possition are you in whilst incanting, what key do you sing the incantations, and do you need to offer a virgin on some sort of alter to achieve these results? where does one find sacrificial virgins nowadays?

1/2 hour to sterilize your jars? I usually boil mine for an hour but am considering trying 30 minutes next time. I, too, dont have a pressure cooker and dont plan to get one unless I find on for cheap at the local thrift store. Are you talking about using regular BRF+Verm (PF Tek) jars?

yep.... plain ole brown rice flour / verm method boiling for 1/2 hour. With the rye ones.. i first boiled the rye seperately then re-boiled after in jars.. no pressure cookin involved. Just make sure you have a decently tight fitting lid for the pot so the heat stays high. after the 1/2 hour of boiling set it aside without removing the lid.. this will ensure it stays very hot and sterile until you are ready to innoculate.
