Wireless Question
    #4196097 - 05/19/05 02:41 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

When I'm downloading large movie files, I use my neighbor's connection (which is much faster :frown: )

Sometimes this box pops up

Am I blocking them from using their connection?  If so, I feel bad staying on.

Well it means that your neighbor probably is also getting that message when you are using that IP. And you get that message when he is using that IP.

So be careful! :yesnod:

I know them really well, but I feel bad if they can't get on

probably trying to use the same ip address for both computers. whenever he turns on the computer he gets an ip and it's probably the same one you're using when that window comes up. if that's the case then he wouldn't be able to connect but all he'd have to do is restart the computer. the only way to fix it is with static ip's and you can't really do that without access to his computer. i'm not really sure that's what it is but seems likely.

Well you could casually mention: "hey neighbor I have a wireless connection and lately my connection is very bad" (then you give the error message). If he doesn't respond, well nevermind it then. If he does, there's your answer.

While connected to his network....
I would find out what your ip address is, go to start->run type cmd

at the prompt, type ipconfig

should be something like

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.104
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

anyways, go into control panel, network connections, find the wireless connection, go to its properties, double click TCP/IP from the list, and where its checked "Obtain IP Address Automatically", change that to manual, and enter the address you were shown, but i'd increment it 10 or so numbers. for subnet mask, use the one that was shown, and add the Gateway at the default gateway...this might be in another tab.

you might have to set your own dns servers, try 205.152.0.5 if you dont know your own, thats bellsouth's. any will work.

should work, if ever in doubt, and want to restore it back to how it was, check Obtain IP address automatically, delete nameservers(DNS) and delete default gateway.
