verm in substrate?

Can someone tell me what good it does to put vermiculate in the substrate if you are going to case? Pf uses verm in his mix, but states that this it is "sort of an internal automatic casing." My only guess would be that it provides moisture. Does the verm have any effect on colonization time? -thanks

Without it, you'd have a solid glob of wet flour. No air. Also, it's the only way to grow without a pressure cooker.
