Ever Worry About This?
    #4197905 - 05/20/05 02:28 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

So I have my cakes going and some other ones incubating. My aquarium pump, flourescent light and water heater are all hooked up to an extension cord which is hooked up to a surge protector. Whenever I am away from my place for long periods of time I worry that somehow something might happen like a short or a spark which will eventually catch something on fire and burn down the whole house and then I get in big trouble and eventually go to jail.
I know it is probably a low chance of that happening but I guess you can't help but be somewhat paranoid about that kinda stuff. Anyone else think like that sometimes or am I the only one?

do you ever leave other things on like a computer? basically if you're really worried about this happening you should unplug everything in your home before you leave.

i guess the thought has occured to me, but not for very long

I do leave things on like my computer and a fan. I guess it's just the fact that it's connected to an illegal activity, that's all.

Not me. My philosophy is if shit's gonna happen it's gonna happen. There's no point in complicating things with an ulcer. Take reasonable precautions and let it go.

I know that's the way I usually think. If it happens it happens, nothing I could have done about it, I think. I mean I do have the surge protector and all and it's such a low chance and everything it shouldn't even be an issue, but still. I guess it's from all my days of smoking weed and being paranoid about EVERYTHING.

you could plug that power strip into GFI outlet. GFI or Grounded Fault Interrupters are grounded outlets typically required by the building code in bathrooms and kitchens. If the current flowing through an outlet suddenly jumps or shorts ie you stuck a fork in the toaster the outlet automatically trips and cuts off all electrical current till you reset it. You could just install a GFI outlet in your growspace or there might be some sort of in-line GFI you can plug through.

A GFI (or RCD as we call them here) is a good idea when mixing mains and water IMO.

They cost very little, protects you from shocks and will probably break the supply before anything can ignite  But I think you are probably over-stressing.

I would go with a GFI extension cord type thing.

http://store.yahoo.com/pondmart-pond-supplies/grounfaulin.html

That is just one of them. Most hardware stores will have them. Much easier than trying to install it in the wall.

Search google for GFI extension cord

Good luck

Ive runs closets for a long time...my closets each have always had 2 extention cords (with the 3 outlets, the short ones), a power strip, 3-4 lights of somesort, a fan, a cool mist, an ultrasonic, and a timer..all WITHIN the chamber at 85-99%. One time, a bulb blew when it was fogged in there (ultra was on) and I turned it on and it popped. Otherwise, the electrical devices put out just enough heat to keep the water off. And chances of a fire starting in a chamber with everything soaked..and there should be pretty much all plastic and metal in your chamber..no cardboard or paper. The thought has definatly crossed my mind, but I just make sure to take reasonable percautions as well.
