Casing Surgery Experiment?
    #4197640 - 05/19/05 09:53 PM (19 years, 4 days ago)

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried an experiment like this.
Let's say you had a fullly colonized casing that had just flushed,
theoretically.. would it be possible to surgically remove HALF
of the casing and replace that half with new casing mix and let the
removed half recolonize? I was thinking if this were possible,
you could keep a casing alive indefinitely by removing one half,
filling, letting it recolonize and then removing the other half.
Does this sound like a plausable idea? Sorry if this question
is rather newbish, but you can't learn unless you ask.
Thanks in advance.

P.S. Even if this experiment is not possible, I'd like to hear
explanations why it's not possible and what any of us could do
to improve the idea (if at all possible). Please discuss!

This topic has had some previous debate. See the following, three, threads.

I have a strong hunch, if done right it will work. Unfortunately, I have not yet gotten to the point of being able to conduct the experiment - I got another month or so before I'll be at that point; but it's definitely on my todo list! ( if for no other reason than to finally settle that long standing debate between scatmanrav and I... <wink> )

Do it, and let us know how it goes.

Although there have been reports here and there of people doing this with success, there still has not been anything decisively agreed or conclusive on the matter as far as I know.

Thanks for the response.

I was curious about this but now thinking it over I'm not sure it'd be the best idea, even if it works. Could anyone here who's more qualified than me give me a basic run-down of what would have to happen in the procedure for it to be of any benefit what-so-ever? I'm talking, how it would be possible to use this to create more yield for a certain amount of time rather than recasing an entire new case. Basically, would there be REAL benefits?

I was thinking maybe it'd be possible to transfer the surgically removed half to another casing and let them both colonize the new halfs, then fruiting both whenever they are ready. Once they are fully colonized and after the first flush, would it be possible to cut the half out that was not needed and plant it in an outdoor grow area while still letting the other half recolonize a new set of casing mix on the half that had been removed and ultimately letting it flush within a decent amount of time? What kind of time periods would be expected between surgery and complete colonization?

Also, I understand cutting out half of a casing layer is going to hurt the growth in the casing, but let's say it were to recolonize the entire substrate, would the casing be any "different" (once fully colonized) than a normal, uncut casing? Would this procedure cause any negative effects toward the casing as a whole (ex: long colonization time, door for contams, reduced flush size, reduced amount of flushes? things of that nature. ) I know a lot of these questions could be answered from an experiment, but to those who haven't tried this, could anyone make an educated guess as to what would happen?

Please note I am no myco-expert and I don't know half of what guys do, I've never even grown before, this is all purely speculation on my part and I'm just looking for insight. PLEASE INFORM ME!

Thanks a lot.

P.S. I haven't read those threads yet and if any of my questions were answered there I apologize, I'm going to go read them now.

After a few transfers I think the mycelium would peter out, also I would be concerned that the uncolonized substrate would contam if it didn't get quickly colonized as it otherwise would if you were spawning to bulk and mixing it around really well for example.

I don't know if these points were made in the other posts...I haven't read them yet either  :whistling:
