Too late to plant?
    #4196609 - 05/19/05 06:36 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Is it too far into spring to plant some poppies? I recently got some seeds.

You'll never unless you try, I've planted in May and gotten a good harvest late August in zone 5.

How many seeds do you have? How cheap were they? If you have, like, a pound or something, than what the hell, scatter some, and maybe some will grow. Also, organize your seeds. What I mean by that, is have 12 containers: each marked differently: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, et cetera. Then, plant poppy seeds in each month, and with the plants that grow, take their seeds and put them in a container marked for whatever month you planted them in. Over the course of 3-5 years, you could (possibly) have some somewhat stable poppy seeds, which, when planted, would be able to do fairly well in a certain planting month. I am not saying that this will produce the best crops, but over time, it could give you a supply that you could use to plant poppy seeds any time of the year and get some okay results.

LoL, poppies sprout like hot cakes. Just throw tons of seeds out and just let it ride. If they grow, well they should make it since most plants do. You can't grow them indoors from what I found, it seems impossible?

everytime i try to grow poppies it never works, arghhh. i put tons and tons. thousands! all over the place and didn't get ONE! to sprout. :frown: and this is the perfect time. well it was more perfect when i did it, but now it's a little late like this thread is about.. though i bet it wouldnt matter too much that they wouldn't sprout if there weren't evil spirits among me halting anything good from showing up, anywhere! argh..

It is easy to get them to sprout what I did was. Loosend up the soil with a rake and some other garden tool. Spread poppies around pack the dirt alittle, then water. You should see sprouts withen a week.

Hey whatever123, that's a pretty snazzy idea.

Did you come up with that? or is there another plant that adapts to those characteristics?

Seems to me, I don't think I'd want to have access to more than one harvest per year.
