Oil paints
    #4195121 - 05/19/05 11:34 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I love how oil paints blend together. They are so damn difficult to get the hang of though. I just got some oil colours. I'm trying to think of something to paint, but I can't.

anyone use oil paints? I need help to learn how to use them properly.

? What's hard to get the hang of about them?

Just try a basic still life, and don't blend the hell out of everything.

Well that's the only real problem I have, everything I do ends up blending together

hmmm.

what are you doing, *exactly*? Just applying paint with a paintbrush?

Also, what kind of paint? The 5 dollar kits of various paint, sadly, are junk.

haha yea it's the cheap paint. Well I got the hang of it now, I didn't know painting faster or slower mattered, but it did. i'll try to post a pic of it when I can

ok, i look forward to that then.

What, exactly, are you using tho?

If your paint is shitty and so is your paintbrush, it'll make it hard to learn. Just drawing normally and using conte / pastels would teach you more.

Also, are you using any medium? Turpentine?

What are you painting on? Paper? Canvapaper? Canvas?

There's alooot of factors that could affect everything blending together

Anyway, completely disregard what I'm saying if you're just casually doing this for fun.

I'm painting a canvas board, i'm using a pretty good paintbrush too. I am using turpenoid natural, along with brush cleaner and thinner. The paint isn't all that bad though, it's by a maker called REEVES. It's going to take some time to get a picture though

ok, that sounds about right.

id reccomend not using canvas board though, even just canvas paper is better.

You've probably used acrylics before, I'm guessing.

The biggest thing is dry time. You might try taking a more relaxed pace. Also look at how you're applying the paint. Any scrubbing motion will blend. Blending will also happen more with thinner paints I've found.

Currently I'm working in acrylics, but I'm probably going to be doing a few oil pieces soon. I loooove oil! But I'm big on blending! lol
