Food for Thought
    #4196307 - 05/19/05 03:22 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

A USEFUL QUOTE TO REPOST AND USE WIDELY

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security,
unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs,
you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things.

Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

--President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1952

Good thing there is no party attempting to abolish social security,
unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs.

What's interesting is that nowadays there are even several liberals who want to abolish farm programs.

I wasn't alive so I can't confirm it... but according to the quote I just posted... yup, he did.

If he said that in here, he'd be banned!

Is the point of this post to somehow say that Bush wants to abolish social security, and thus the republican party will not be heard from again?  I have never seen Bush say he wants to abolish social security....

Paradigm... Ive seen you have libertarian views, which I certainly respect, but I think the problem of getting rid of all those govt. subsidies is the "poor" wouldnt stand for it and they would cut the heads off of the rich.  No matter how fair and right it is to make people pay there own way, the poor will revolt if they dont get what they want.  How do you see this problem resolved within your libertarian "paradigm"?

A clarification: Just because Im advocating for the necessity of these subsidies, dosent mean i like them and i certainly would like to see them scaled back from there current state.

The point of the post is you THINK it is about Bush, until you see when it was said, and WHO said it.

A DEAD REPUBLICAN!

I didnt think it was about Bush... I guess i just dont see where your goin with this...

Its an interesting quote and I do, in part, believe it.  I have not however heard of any party, except for libertarian, want to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs. I guess thats why the libertarin party is negligible.

edit- thx for the link paradigm

Bush right now is trying to privatize Social Security to rely on an economy that is not doing that great. This is not technically abolishing SS, but it would certainly sabotage it...

The economy is doing fine, growing at over 3%. And he only wants to give people the option to privatize a small fraction. If you have a link that shows otherwise Id love to see it.

Social Security is fucked either way. What he really needs to do is just let people keep their own money and do what they want with it. Then I can invest it in foreign currencies in countries where the president isn't a complete moron.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/ike.asp

That gets to the bottom of the quote.

Pretty accurate, but begining to take a new life as an urban legend too.

It was never said by Ike, rather written in a letter to his brother.

?

What I don't understand is how people think privatizing it is a blow to it.

I dunno. I'm sure they're around somewhere. In any case, the Euro seems to be doing quite well these days.
