I think eliminating the filibuster should help Palpatine Bush gain more power which he needs to advance his designs. By all means eliminate the filibuster, republics are over-rated.

I didn't know the filibuster was part of the constitution. I also didn't know that George Bush was a member of the Senate. What an amazing man.

The filibuster is not in the constitution, but it has been part of our legislative system since the eighteenth century. It is also embodied in the Senate's own rules. The filibuster serves an important purpose as a means of protecting minority opinions, giving them a chance to be heard and allowing for a method of extending debate on those things which may be passed too hastily without such a device.

Who made a claim that George Bush was a member of the senate? What an amazing conclusion you have drawn.

1stimer did by saying Bush is going to eliminate the filibuster. He then said that it will "destroy the constitution" but as you stated its not in the constitution it is a senate rule.

There is no proposal to eliminate the filibuster for anything other than executive and judicial appointments. Legislation will not be effected.

The filibuster does serve an important purpose and should not be eliminated but there is just something that irks me when people are speaking for 24 hours plus and begin to read recipes for meatloaf just to delay. And remember that this can also be used for the bad. It kept segregation intact for longer than if filibusters were not allowed.

Yes, Strom Thurmond's filibuster on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the longest in US history, but he still lost. If America can survive that filibuster, it can survive this one too. I'd say that on balance, keeping the filibuster around does more good than harm.

I agree.

If the Filibuster is eliminated, it will bite the Republicans in the ass eventually.

Once again and with more gusto THERE IS NO PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE THE FILIBUSTER FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN JUDICIAL AND EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENTS. LEGISLATION IS NOT EFFECTED. Thank you.

THEORETICALLY, YES. BUT IT WOULD PROBABLY MEAN POLITICAL SUICIDE, AS THE VOTERS WOULD BE UNLIKELY TO STAND FOR IT.

QUITE RIGHT. IT HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH LEGISLATION OR A GENERAL ELIMINATION OF THE FILIBUSTER. LIKE I SAID.

Can we go back to whispering now since you all finally seem to have gotten the point?

YES!

Now, if this JUDICIAL Filibuster-breaker passes... it is only a matter of time before it bites the Republicans in the ass.

It may be helpful to them NOW, but says it will still serve them in 6 years?

Also, changing the rules RIGHT BEFORE new Supreme Court Justices are named is SHITTY Politics, no matter what side of the aisle you are on.

I'm not really a fan of the Republicans, but the Democrats have been abusing Senate rules and breaking 200+ years of tradition for their own partisan purposes. I think using fillabusters to overide the demcratic process of majority rule is destructive and below the belt. They are refusing to allow even a vote on these nominees.
I see the Republicans rule highly necesssasry to return any semblance of a functioning government. Sure, it might have some blowback, but it's probobly better than no judges by a president of either party ever nominated because of political fanatics.

Bottom line, Democrats brought it on themselves by abusing the system with their self-absorbed partisanship. It's too bad it came to this.

???

Filibusters are what keep politicians from DOING something really really controversial. Fuck that. In an ideal government, nothing would be done. Nothing.

Republicans have filibustered judges in the 60's... There's no 200 yrs of tradition.. Also, filibustering may not be mentioned in the constitution per say, but they are a system of checks and balances so one majority party can not dominate legislature, or judiciary, and appoint judges that stand in opposition to main-stream thought.
