For the TOOL fans...
    #4194693 - 05/19/05 11:27 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

This might be old, but for those that haven't seen it there is some interesting stuff to think about on this page:

TOOL

--------------------
The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, they're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away, but if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth...

ive heard the exact same sample used in movies. usually as an elevator sound.
its also on Wu-Tang Clan's Wu-Tang Forever, on the track "Older Gods"
maybe thats just another part of maynards master plan.

either way... overthinking, overanalyzing separates that guy from a life.

Tool fans arent the worst.... just ill informed. Just because some pretentious fuck named Maynard made a pop version of every King Crimson song and got radio play, everyone thinks it is so original and deep. Maynard has a great voice, and I enjoy Tool, but the fans really need to wipe the mascara out their eyes and back search for the original.

I've never really seen Maynard be that pretentious.
I've heard him tell people not to listen to him.
I've heard him tell people to stop looking for THE hidden meanings in his songs and come to their own conclusions.

He may come off as pretentious at a lot of points but I think he's just trying to stop people from being so fucking obsessed with him. Known to give single word answers to piss of interviewers. It's not like he's sitting around claiming he's an amazing fucking god prophet and we should all follow him like sheep, and it's not like he's saying his music is revolutionary.

My thoughts as well. I hear people say he's pretentious, but I just have never seen it. He's always telling people to find there own answers and that he's not it.

I downloaded some King Crimson and they don't sound like tool AT ALL.....I haven't heard one tool song that I would consider to be close to anything pop either...

Right. Maynard sat there in the studio and started with In The Court Of the Crimson King and thought "Hmmm, how can I make 21st Century Schizoid Man into a song for my new pop radio band......I know! I'll just change the bass and drums around a little to make it a little more poppy and I'll call it Sweat!" Then he somehow manifested into being all the drum and guitar parts right there onto tape in the studio and chuckled to himself as he thought about how he'd duped the public into thinking he'd done something original, when really all he did was rip of King Crimson, song for song.

just because tool play progressive rock music with odd time signatures doesnt mean they took from king crimson, like you were saying, anymore than it means they took from jethro tull, yes, pink floyd, rush, dream theatre, and who-else have you.

Its called influences.

Those good 'ol progressive psychedelia rock from the late 60s and 70s took their influences from blues and old rock for their melodies and even took a lot from their jazz influences for the 'progressive' song structures and rhythms.

Now, Progressive Metal is taking their INFLUENCES from those classic rock bands along with elements from heavy metal, to death metal, to grunge.

By no means are they taking from King Crimson. In fact King Crimson state that from touring with Tool over the years, its influenced their own music, which really shows in KC's The Power to Believe.

We take in all this input and churn it around inside ourselves to produce something new that has some of the same qualities as all of our influences and still is totally different.

Besides, Tool doesnt really take much of their actual sound, their eclectic, sparatic, sometimes ambient, sprawling passages, nor meaning from King Crimson. As far as lyrically, King Crimson is more 'poetry to music' compared to what tool does. It has more of a classic sense about it.

And I doubt maynard really is that pretentious. Im pretty sure its just his reputation. And if you were in a band like that, your reputation would preceed you too. Its the people who say hes pretenetious without having any contact with him in their lives that make him 'pretentious' in the view of our media circus society. I just see him as someone whos really introverted.

You have to say though... compared to the music all around them in the last few decades, tool is pretty fucking original.

Introvert yes! pretentious, I think not... Follow your own heart. Find your own path. Discover your own truths. This is Maynard's/Tool's message.

So they are influenced by great acts like KC. I'm sure KC had some great influences themselves...

Besides, don't judge the man/band by the fans and don't judge the fans by the bands. It's all subjective psilocyberin.

Your opinion, psilocyberin, is very closed minded IMHO...

Tool is influenced by King Crimson in some ways. Rythmically, for sure. The odd meters, for example, and some of the experimental stuff.

However, tool is a lot more minimalist (boring?) melodically then King Crimson. King Crimson got a lot of influence from bartok and stravinsky, but most of Adam's guitar licks are just straight up pentatonic. They manage not to sound too cliched for pentatonic melodies, but they are still almost entirely pentatonic.

It would be pretty hard to compare Adam to Mr. Fripp. I'm not saying Adam sucks by any stretch of the imagination, I'm just saying you can't make a pop-copy of king crimson without a robert fripp, and there is only one guy as good as robert fripp.

I never said Tool sucks, and furthermore, never stated that they suck because they ripped KC. Of course bands have "influences" where they copy a style or even a melody/rhythms.

My problem is with the hardcore Tool fans that go on about how original and amazing Tool is while not even knowing who King Crimson is. It is a lot like someone being completely engrossed in Nirvana and not knowing who the Meatpuppets are.

KC has no gimmick. They have a nice light show, dont wear costumes (usually). They are just a bunch of amazing musicians playing music. They arent a drag queen placating to goth kids while turning their back to the crowd.

i like tool. is maynard pretensious? i dont know and i dont care. is he a god? certaianly not. and to tell you the truth, weather their music is completly origional or complete knock offs of bands ive never heard of doesnt really bother me much either. i like the music, it makes my ears tingle. the lyrics hit home, and they put on one hell of a show. its entertaining and possibly a little eye opening if heard in the proper state.

up until now, ive never heard of king crimson, though now i will most likely go check them out. but to say tool uses costumes and gimmicks to placate goth kids.....come on now :smirk:

Yeah, how dare someone like Tool and think they are amazing and not listen to King Crimson. The strange thing is, the way you compare the two bands, you seem to not be familiar with either band's catalog. Why would you even say something like "Maynard made a pop version of every King Crimson song"? If you are a respector of bands and the work they do at all, why would you even use one member of the band, the singer no less, to represent the entire band in your rhetoric? And please explain how the music on the Tool recordings compares to Crimson's body of work. Perhaps you could compare Opiate to the psychadelic jazz rock era, or Undertow to Lark's Tongues in Aspic through Red, or Aenima to the 3 eighties albums. It just doesn't make sense.

If anything, Danny's admiration of Bill Bruford lends more to the Crimson comparison than anything else. And I remember reading a quote once where Maynard said of Crimson something like "This is basically the band we've been ripping off over the years". He was giving accolades to Crimson as a band that was one of his and the other member's of the band's influences. I suspect that your criticism of Tool fans for not knowing Crimson likely stems somehow from this remark of Maynard's. Crimson was coming on the road with them at the time so, in context, it makes sense that Maynard would say that as a tribute. It doesn't mean that "Maynard ripped them off song for song" Get real dude.
