So....Doves.
    #4194377 - 05/19/05 08:59 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Wow.

I went and saw Doves w/ Mercury Rev last night, and it was stellar.  I'd run out of pot so me and my girlfriend scraped all the resin we could and smoked it right before leaving to catch Mercury Rev. One of the big advantages of knowing the booker of the club is that you know all the exact set times.

Mercury Rev was fantastic..I saw them for the first time at Coachella but I've loved them for a long time. Their show had awesome psychedelic visuals complete with the kinds of quotes you see in Shroomery signatures, quotes that pierce to the core of the experience of life. And also, William Blake's famous "Hell is full of spectators."  The singer's antics are a bit goofy but still awesome all in all.

Then Doves came on...I've heard one Doves song from an old album, and their new LP Some Cities which is EXCELLENT (I know Krishna will agree with me on that!)  This band....this band fucking blew me away last night.  One of the best rock shows I have seen all year.

As I watched them, I kept wondering how it was these awesome Brits were so overshadowed by other bigger names?  I could imagine their sound filling up the biggest stadiums and Madison Square Garden. Lately I've been so annoyed at Coldplay and it seems to me that Doves have a similar sound to Coldplay but INFINITELY more interesting and dense, less about tasteful arrangement than about creating lush sonic worlds.

I wish I had been more stoned the entire show. I would suggest to anyone with a chance to see this tour that they do so. When you do, smoke a :spliff:, eat a brownie, or definitely eat some MDMA!

never - copied a bunch of their music from a friend maybe 6-7 months back, but then didn't even listen to it until last month. needless to say, i was quite taken by it! i really agree with your comparison to coldplay, but "INFINITELY more interesting and dense"

Doves kick ass, There Goes the Fear is one of my favourite tracks ever.

I heard that the lead singer of the Doves had a throat infection a little while ago, did it effect their set?

They took a bunch of dates off their tour cause of that, starting with Coachella actually so I missed them there. He sounded epic last night, definitely not suffering from any vocal setbacks at all.
