New Research Could Lead To Meth Vaccine

New Research Could Lead To Treatment For Meth Addicts
May 18, 2005 - firstcoastnews.com

OMAHA, NE -- Scientists in Nebraska hope that they may be on the verge of having a treatment for methamphetamine addicts using techniques they are developing to help smokers quit.

A medical research company called Prommune Inc. in Omaha is testing the vaccine.

Dr. Sam Sanderson has been working on the nicotine vaccine for two years. It doesn't have a name but according to Dr. Sanderson it cures rats’ addiction to nicotine. The next step is to get it into humans. That could be just a matter of time and money.

If it works the vaccines may be used to prevent other addiction to other drugs like methamphetamine and heroine.

The vaccine works the same way. Dr. Sanderson says an antigen would be attached to the vaccine and sent into the body. The body would then develop antibodies to fight off meth addiction much like the body's immune system would fight off the flu after getting the flu vaccine.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse latest reports show that use of methamphetamine in this country has reached epidemic proportions.
Studies have shown that use of meth causes long term changes in the human brain that can lead to impaired memory and motor skills.

When will the U.S. Government learn that Drug addiction is a medical problem not a moral problem. How many more people have to have their lives ruined in this rediculous war on drugs.

What exactly do they mean, "fight off meth addiction"? Does this mean that you won't get any effects from it?

And what of people who take prescription amphetamines for purposes? What of similar CNS stimulants? This has a lot of questions that the article skims over.

Finding treatment solutions like this is helping the effort against the War on Some Drugs. Substance addiction is a medical problem, and needs to be adressed as one. With drugs legalized, if people have problems with addiction they know they will be able to get help a lot easier with "vaccines" like these.

heres the thing to fight off the addiction they would have to make the drug inactive in man, and there fore severly fuck with the neurotransmitters in the head, the receptors and the bodies natural priocesses.. hot damn.. this probably will be worse than meth...

I can see how a "vaccine" to take away the physical addiction and cravings of a central nervous stimulant, nicotine, might lead to similar results for other central nervous stimulants such as methamphetamine - but what in the hell do *either* of those have to do with OPIATES, which are depressants, and we know, already, that part of the addiction has to do with action on one of the opiod receptors...???

It will most likely NOT make the drug inactive. It will cut down the withdrawal symptoms dramatically.

they're targeting alot of drugs with these vaccines
it's actually unbelievably scary considering the state of human rights, both in america and across the globe. Public knowledge and therefore policy just isn't keeping pace with technology.

Will people have the choice not to take this "medicine"?
