God is Dead
    #4193101 - 05/18/05 11:53 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

So often we are given this quote from Nietzsche and nothing else. But here is the real quote:

God is dead: but considering the state the species Man is in, there will perhaps be caves, for ages yet, in which his shadow will be shown. ?Nietzsche

Isn't he saying God is alive, that there will always be traces of the divine? Most people just pass along the first part, God is dead, because that is all they know or they want you to believe something that is not true.

I think he's saying people are superstitious. And will be for a long time to come.

I was once in a catechism class, and the teacher said that anything experienced by any of the constituents of the Holy Trinity was experienced by all. I immediately asked "Well, did all of God die when Jesus died on the cross?"

The response was that death could not hold God.

The idea itself interests me. Death cannot hold God. Hm.

Yes, I've heard the expression that "God is dead." But I agree with your interpretation. "Considering the state that man is in" ... would that mean man's moral decline? I think so, after reading the following:

What Nietzsche is concerned at in relating the above is that God is dead in the hearts of modern men - killed by rationalism and science. This same God however, before becoming dead in men's hearts and minds, had provided the foundation of a "Christian-moral" defining and uniting approach to life as a shared cultural set of belief fully within which people had lived their lives.

Nietzsche seems to be suggesting that the acceptance of the Death of God will also involve the ending of accepted standards of morality and of purpose. Without the former and accepted faith based standards society is threatened by a nihilistic situation where peoples lives are not particularly constrained by considerations of morality or particularly guided by any faith related sense of purpose.

What are we now to do?

Given the "unbelievability" of the "God-hypothesis" Nietzsche himself seemed to favour the creation of a new set of values "faithful to the earth." This view perhaps being associable with the possibility of the "Overman" or "Superman."

"I teach you the overman. Man is something that shall be overcome. What have you done to overcome him? All beings so far have created something beyond themselves; and do you want to be the ebb of this great flood and even go back to the beasts rather than overcome man? What is the ape to man? A laughingstock or a painful embarrassment. And man shall be just that for the overman: a laughingstock or a painful embarrassment..."

Nietzsche Thus spoke Zarathustra

"Companions, the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks -- those who write new values on new tablets. Companions, the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. ... Fellow creators, Zarathustra seeks, fellow harvesters and fellow celebrants: what are herds and shepherds and corpses to him?"

Nietzsche Thus Spoke Zarathustra

um... thats not the "original quote"
im sure its something he said... but the "original" quote was from his "parable of a madman"

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him."

http://www.historyguide.org/intellect/madman_i.html

give it a read.

i think what he was saying is that our growing faithlessness will eventually snuff out the idea of God.

in the parable, he first states that we have killed god, then states that he has come with the news too early, that the "tremendous event is still on its way"

so i think hes predicting a future of a faithless society.

so that could go with the quote that you posted too.

that even if the consensus of our future society will be that there is no God, the idea of an almighty will sustain if only in a few caves.

something to that extent is what i get out of it.

God is always dead, always alive, and always influencing our pithy lives, and will forever be as long as people hold onto their views, miconceptions, and often ignorance as to what attributes "god" contains.

It's irrelevant what Nietzsche meant, you'd have to believe god were living for it to apply.

Luckily for you, this may be true.  Think of the many dead Germans who won't provide such assistance to those of us still living.

So was Abraham Lincoln (Blue Mass, Mercury Poisoning). That didn't stop him from promoting his "insane" message.
