Oyster Growing Conditions?
    #4192902 - 05/18/05 10:37 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

It's been raining in my area of the country for the last several weeks and I was interested in going oyster collecting. I know most mushrooms wait until a sunny day before popping up but I was wondering if oysters can thrive in rainy, cloudy weather and grow without much heat from the sun.

you do need at least 45 degrees, up to 60 degrees for fruiting. I had found some on some logs ona warm day in january once after a snow covering. go figure.

check above your eye level in oaks for these. dyding oaks on the ground may be eaten by deer before you can get to them. I have had my best luck in the cool rain.

The oyster (pleurotus ostreatus) is an autumn/winter mushroom. They definitely do not need high temperatures to fruit, on the contrary.

Thanks for the replies and the welcomes everyone. I know Oysters do not need a lot of heat I was wondering if they need actual light from the sun but it sounds like I should be all set. I found a few spots earlier last month and haven't picked lately so I hope my ventures will be fruitfull.

And even in Summer, if it's wet, you will find many. In Wisconsin at least, I've picked Oysters through July and August, amidst 90-95 degree highs.
Even in full shade (no direct sunlight), oysters will do fine.
