Rye or WBS?
    #4191565 - 05/18/05 03:18 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I am getting my All-American Pressure Canner soon, along with some quart jars, casing supplies, the whole nine yards. Of course I am gonna go the grain route, but I have a question.

From what I have read, rye seems like the best choice. Or is WBS just as good, nutrient-wise? They have a 25-lb bag of WBS at my local grocery store for only $5. That would last me a while. Where can I find bulk quantities of rye? The only place I can think of that would have rye grain are those health food stores where you scoop it out of the little bins. Is this where you guys get it? What is the average price you are paying?

Rye produces better fruits for straight fruiting. WBS is the choice spawn material of the two in my opinion because 1) it's harder to screw up WBS than rye, and 2) it's dirt cheap and finally 3) breaks up a bit easier when spawning, thus giving you more inoculation points.

It depends on what your goal is, spawn or direct fruiting.

Is there a reason behind WBS being harder to screw up or is that just from experience?

I think I still don't understand the term "spawn", even though I have seen it everywhere. Can you enlighten me really quick?

Spawn = To add colonized jars to another nutritious substance. IE: Poo, Compost or Straw. The mycelium from those jars then eats through the poo, compost or straw and makes a HUGE mycelium network. This can create LARGE fruits, LARGE crops and BIG potency.

In my opinion... WBS is the SHIT!

Thanks Sammy. So you basically would have a container of say, poo, which you add the colonized substrate to in order for it to be colonized as well, which you would then case, resulting in a bigger yield? Is that correct?

WBS is more forgiving, if the moisture content is a little OFF.

As WBS is a mix of seeds, some can be a bit wet, some a bit dry & the mix of those balances it all out.

With rye, moisture content has to be JUST RIGHT, as it is all the same grain. To dry, colonization stalls, to wet & wet spot bacteria sets in.

VERY correct. Roadkill's Horse Poo Meathod <<<==== I'd use this as your jumpoff point on bulk. This works GREAT!!! Mine fully colonized in 7 days.

Your poo would be pasturized, and then you would spawn your jars to it. Then comes the spawn run.. this usually takes from 7 days - 14 days or so. Then you may case, or not case. Hopefully this all helped.

The poo has GREAT nutrients in it.. more than birdseed, PF jars or Rye.... so once you spawn to it, your substrate becomes super nutritious. Mushrooms now have the ability to grow large and knock you on your ass when you chomp down on em.

diver, do you just grow straight off that poo that you have colonizing in your pic? Just case it and let it fruit? Or do you transfer it to smaller containers with more room to case and fruit?

Nah, this poo is the real shit.

You want to go get your own aged horse shit that has been weathered and is older, not fresh, and pasteurize that shit.  OR you could buy some from TennStud, which is a sponsor here.

There are some that have used the Home Depot shit, but the results aren't as good I believe.  The Real horse shit is the way to go bro.

Good luck,
CLUTCH

I see, so I should make my way down to the nearest farm and ask if I can shovel up some bags of poo then. Sweet. Maybe I should wait until the next rain and kill two birds with one stone.....

ive had luck with a mixture of rye and wbs. i can never just do the tek like it was written. which is shunned, but im an experimenter and sometimes it works. sometimes i have to put bleach in the humidfier and start everything all over.
