I have and use the same one. I leave the cover off and have had no problems. Some will argue that 120 is too hot but after trying numerous drying experiments I disagree. In my tests, the potency does not seem to change under heat of 120.

thats somewhat reashuring although i'm concerned about that high temp. maybe if i get rid of the heating element and put a fan in it. is therre anyway to put something in-line to adjust the heat?

you would do all that and not just get an american harvest that you could be sure of? road is not lying when he says they can be found at second-hand stores. think about what you would do with a useless appliance you got as a gift... give it to goodwill.

i apriciate your effort but my walmart only carries the 40 dollor american harvest. 11 dollars good 40 dollars bad. theres got to be a way to splice something into the wire that will adjust the temp. i dont know enough about electricity. does anyone know about this? thanx pcilocyben

I got the NESCO american harvest and removed the heating element and rigged the wires so it runs now just like before just no heat. Its really simple.

turn it on and see if there is any air flow!~
if there isn't any...
I'd use the racks that you have...and put them on top of a fan.
it will take longer to dry your shrooms...but it will work.

i think first i'll try to put a fan under it. if that doesnt work i'll take out the heating element and put a fan in it. i called osh and they said to use a in line thermostat, but then i called a couple other places and they said it wont work.

go to any hardware store and buy a rheastat (sp?) that will work for you. it will limit the electricity to the element thereby allowing you to control the temp. i have never seen a dehydrator without a fan though. look in the bottom. i guess it could just be by convection though.

whats the deal with dehydrators? cant you just seal the shrooms in a container with a bunch of desiccant?

you can and it works good but for a large grow a dehydrator is a lot more efficient

putting a fan under it did not lower the temp. next i have to get a smaller fan to fit inside.

good to know. i was just planning on using lots of silica (which is rechargable) for this... ill probably end up going the dehydrator route if i have to do bulk.
in terms of what goes on with the mushrooms.. is dehydrating first and then dessicating a better option? I am just looking at what is most benefitial to the shrooms

It's generally a bad idea to go straight to the desiccant chamber, especially with larger fruits---it takes quite a long time to remove all that water with no airflow, and mushrooms don't like being wet for a long time.
If you don't have a dehydrator, the best way to get them cracker dry is to fan dry them first for a few days and then move them to desiccant chamber to get rid of the remaining water. Works great if you're cheap!
