Trump Unveils his OWN plan for towers to replace the twin towers.

I think it would be an affront to everything 9/11 has come to mean if we let someone like Donald Trump make money off of it like it was any other piece of real estate.

But it is just a piece of real estate. It may hold meaning for nearly every American, and many others around the world. But in the end it is just a high valued piece of land smack dab in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world.

To me it resembles the Reichstag fire in Germany prior to WW2. Build another building there and get over it. Somebody will be making money off of it no matter who builds a new building there.

Symbols mean something. A building designed by Liebeskind is going to have a hell of a lot of heart and soul thrown into the design. To me, Trump's #1 goal is money, whereas the teams designing the Freedom Tower were architects with a sense of symbolic purpose.

Symbolic or not it will still make plenty of money for whoever designs, builds, and owns the building. It doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me. But I don't live in NYC.

What I don't understand is what you mean by my selective use of symbolism.

All I know is that they put out a call for people to design a building. Liebeskind answered the call with a beautiful design that seems heartfelt. I believe architecture is just as emotional an art as any other medium, and I think the Freedom Tower will look beautiful on the NYC skyline.

For Trump to come out now, on the top of the world lately due to the Apprentice, and say well I have a better idea...it reeks of money.

Who cares? It's capitalism, whether we add some bullshit symbolism and a funny name to a tower or simply recreate the old towers, all that matters is what is better economically for the area. Trump's towers look just like the old Twin Towers to me though.

well, so you care about this. I could give a shit about the New York skyline, but I still care about moneygrubbing fuckers screwing other people over. I didn't care about the twin towers before, and I won't start for any reason. Buildings are less important than people to me.

The new Tower that Liebeskind designed is heavy heavy HEAVY on public parks and community centers. By only making ONE tower he utiltizes the area around it as a huge public communcal space. Building two towers would negate that.

Behind it all though, the tower is designed for commerce and money. I'm fairly certain that within the design contests were the stipulations that "the new tower must have XXXXX square feet of floor space", and other such things. The contest was created to give a sense of it being "heartfelt and fuzzy" but the reality was that it was driven by a desire for profits.
