not being hard on you ally, it just really peaves me about society today. everything is just thrown away. in any given year only 5 % of all recyclable material is actually recycled. so much waste. buck up soldier and deal with that smell for a few minutes it would take to dump some bleach on it outside and let it sit for a while. then clean it up with some soap and water. just a thought.
peace

In your opinions, if the spore syringes were left in the heat, in a mail truck for several days, could they have become contaminated at that time?

Since I lost 100%, it seems like that may have been the cause. It seems unlikely that EVERY jar would have been exposed to airborne contaminants or had surviving bacteria after the boil.

yes there could have been bacteria that survived the boiling. there are thermoduric bacteria strains that can survive even the best of pasturization teks.
yes the syringes could be contaminated, if they were when whomever made them up. as far as heat in a delivery truck, it could also have killed off all the spores, depending on how hot they actually got and the length of time they were at that heat.
my bet is on the sterilization method you used, sorry.

still, im more inclined to believe it was the syringes. i mean, those are pretty sterile practices and it does seem unlikely that all would get contamed

ask these old timers here about that. even the best of practices can still lead to contams. have read it several times here.
could very well be the syringes, we will never be able to tell.

Now that I know the bleach will sterilize a plastic container, I will not throw them out next time. Thanks for the tip.

How would you recommend avoiding this in the future? I had a new bag of vermiculite this time around, different brand than I have used before. Should I not use the same vermiculite again? Should I boil for 2 hours instead of 1? I cannot buy a PC at this time.

if you are worried about the verm, just spread it out on a cookie sheet and toss it in the oven at about 340 degrees F for an hour or so.
verm is a mineral (ground mica) that usually resists contam.

I am in talks with the spore vendor right now regarding the possibility that the spores were contaminated. I'll let you all know how that goes.

At this point, I plan to replace my air filter, bake the vermiculite & try again with new spores.

Although I recognize that even the best of sterilization techniques can result in contamination, I am still having a hard time believing that 100% of my 15 jars would be contaminated with bacteria when the exact same sterilization techniques have been used on 3 previous occasions without losing a single jar. (I spray my whole body with lysol, I get pretty sterilization crazy)

It would be one thing if a few of them went bad, but all 15?

Unless there was a heat resistant bacteria living inside the vermiculite, which survived being boiled for over an hour.

Whatever it was, it was something that was inside all 15 of my jars and made very fast work of them.

Sucks, cause now it's in my apartment.

There is going to be a lot of lysol sprayed tonight.
