Sterilizing In the Microwave
    #4188839 - 05/17/05 11:03 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i cannot find any information on this, though in a previous post i was told glass can go in the microwave and you can sterilize this way.

could someone post a link or just tell me a rule of thumb for how long to nuke pint jars with verm/brf mix. should i nuke for an hour and then again to be extra sure?

this seems real easy too, no boiling water or anything, why dont' more people do this or do they and i'm just not aware?

You may sterilize your casing layer in the microwave. Place in a microwave safe container, nuke for 5 minutes.. stir, nuke for another 5. Let cool until room temp. Check if the water content is still okay, then case. If it's a little dry.. ... add a little sterilized h2o.

No. Not sugguested. The least effective measure is steaming your jars. The most, is pressure cooking. Steaming can only be utilized with the PF TEK, not while using grains.

Because you cannot sterilize any degree of mass in a home kitchen PC, because they are to low wattage.

It works sometimes, sometimes not. It also tends to boil the moisture out of the jars content, which is BAD.

Hope you have plastic lids?

damnit again. yea, i've boiled the verm/brf before when i grew, it's just hard with so many jars. i had a good success rate with no contams though. pressure cookers are so expensive, i've looked around at yard sales and stuff and haven't found any used. i'm a cheap ass

agar, were you the one who posted your tutorial for growing with horse poo, it was in a big box and you mixed with water then put in bags and sterilized. maybe it wasn't you...
- but could the spores grow straight from the manure? or is that when grain is used

Use + signs in the search page, try
+sterilize +microwave
which only finds threads with both words.
I sterilize syringes, water and liquid cultures in the microwave. And yes I put metal in all the time, I have posted a lot of times about metal in microwaves so can't be bothered again. Search for my username and +metal +microwave if you want info

Problem with substrates in microwaves is there are hot and cold spots left.

this is exactly why it doesn't work effectively.

You must weigh your jars carefully to determine moisture losses. 2 different 800W microwaves will give different results, as will the shape of the jars, glass thickness etc.
1ml water is 1gram so it is easy enough.
Sealed Autoclave bags puff up and effectively steam the substrate with little moisture loss. The steam stops hot/cold spots to some degree.
