Looking for a good tent
    #4188300 - 05/17/05 08:36 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

One that will last a long time. Preferably around $150.. 2-man.. three season.

The most important thing is that it doesn't leak. Every one of my previous tents has leaked somehow. Whether it be condensation coming through the walls, or leaking through the seams.. or whatever. I want one that I can stay dry in during torrential downpours.

I know that tents have to have good ventilation.. but that damn cheap nylon that the second you touch the wall water starts coming through.. I hate that. Is there anyway around this.. besides dishing out 500 bucks for an expedition tent.

I know you need a groundcover plastic under the tent to help prevent water from getting in.. but I don't want to have to put a freaking tarp over my tent to stay dry.

Here's a couple I was looking at-

Can anyone recommend a good one? One that is durable and wont LEAK. double and triple stiched seams are good.. taped and all that good stuff. Is it necessary to seal all the seams after you get it? and so on.

I don't have much experience with Eureka, but there is a Sierra Designs Sirius and, actually for that matter, Hyperlight AST, both great, good quality, light tents that shouldn't leak. I can double check on one that meets your specifications tomorrow.

Ok, so after looking around my work for a while, I think that the REI brand Sub Alpine UL (retails for around 240USD) will be your best bet, because it has reinforced seams and sides in order to specifically eliminate water leaking, as well as withstanding winds. It also has a rainfly and is breathable. You can also pick up a Footprint to go with it, which is a fitted groundcover. It's for two people and three seasons.

I would say the Sierra Designs Hyperlight AST would be your next best bet.

yeah.. I don't know if I'm going to get a Eureka or not.. but probably an A-frame tent, as they are the strongest..besides expedition tents.. and one that is 3.5 season and fits 3 or 4 people.

It needs to have bathtub floor, multi-layered waterproof coating, taped seals, full rain fly that comes to ground, fairly large vestibule.. and I can work from there. I did some research on making a storm-proof tent, and that's the best criteria to start with. Instead of putting seam sealer on the seams, which can crack, they recommend using thompson's water seal.. and you have to make sure that the fly is covering all the seams of the tent, touching the ground hopefully, and stretched tight so that it cannot contact the tent.

I was thinking a Eureka Timberline outfitter 4 or something..
I didn't see the REI tent you were talking about on there website, so I may just wait until I can go to one of their stores so I can check them out in person.. kind of sketched about buying one online.

ok.. so I was looking at good quality 4 season tents... almost ready to dish out 400 bucks or more for one.. when I stumbled across this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A%3AIT&rd=1
and someone else was selling the exact same one.. buy it now for $110. If that tent is as good as they say it is.. it's perfect. 4 season military tent.. Built to withstand high wind, snow, rain, even desert.. double sided fly.. comes new with poles, fly, guy lines, stakes, instructions and repair kit.. is it too good to be true??

Looks alright, but it's quite heavy. Also, I would be worried about it just falling apart or something, since there isn't a return policy.

If it is all that it claims to be, then it sounds like a pretty nice tent.

well it is a 4 season tent.. most are heavier than normal 3 seasons because of thicker/more poles.. and thicker and more fly material. But it's still pretty light as far as 4 seasons go.

heh.. you should have said something before I bought it
oh well........ is it a shitty tent or something? As long as it doesn't leak, I'm cool. I mainly got it because the rainfly comes to the ground and it has a guylines and a vestibule. Is it a low quality tent? It looks like sportsmans guide is selling it for $250.. or something almost exactly like it. I can always get a better tent later if this one turns out to suck..

I may be a little late, but rei's quarter dome UL is going to be on sale this weekend (maybe now, it's a labor day sale) for $150. I don't own one, but have slept in one and seriously considered buying one. I can't attest to the absolute bomb-proofness of it as I haven't tested in a range of conditions, but we had no trouble with several rainy days.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
