Usually their 'caps' start turning black, depending on how severe the stems can blue. As they decompose they usually shrink and may get mushy. If an abort stops growing [wouldn't be an abort if it was growing] it's time to pick it off. You can check them out after picking them, if they're smelly, soggy, or otherwise wrong-looking you probably shouldn't mess with 'em.
