Using a server vs. a desktop

So I was surfing around on eBay looking for a barebones desktop. I'm looking and looking, then I stumble across a few rackmount servers.
Can anyone tell me why I would want to use a server instead of a regular desktop.
I'm not into gaming or anything that is resource intensive, I'm just interested in the sheer overkill that they offer
Thanks, Lana

What would you like a link to? I'm thinking of a server like this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=106269&item=5775250666&rd=1
And as far as a desktop goes... I'm pretty sure if I bought a desktop with those specifications, it would be more expensive.
So why don't people just buy these rackmountable servers?

looks awesome. i bet the reserve is closer to $2,000US. the main problem with using servers as desktops that i see is most people need/want full sized PCI and AGP cards.

I suggest if you were thinking of buying a server to use as both a server and a personal PC dont. Especially when its for your business.

If you are hosting a website, like the shroomery, then you will want to use a server.

Please forgive my dumbness but am i correct in thinking that a server is really just a very powerful regular old computer?Could you buy one as Lana says and just run it as a regular computer to surf the web and whatnot, and that the only disadvantage is the price?Does a server have cd drives ect in them? The only server ive ever seen was just a very large tower type device but instead if drives in the front it just had tons of lights and a few switches.

Essentially there is no difference between a server and a desktop, besides a server usually comes in a funky large awkward heavy case for rackmount reasons
It would really depend on the specs that you were looking at I guess.
The only difference is that most manufacturers of servers will often use hardware that isn't the newest cutting edge advancements blaa bla. They tend to stick with chip sets and layouts that have been around a little longer and are tried and true as rock solid.
Lets face it bleeding edge hardware nowadays is not always the most stable and dependable. All the manufacturers get in wars for new and fast and tend to forget testing and QC
If you need a hand juggling around specs of whats most important to you let me now.

id buy a rackmount if i had the cash. saves space, and is sexy. I dont think you will be as "cutting edge" as a PC like vamp said, because of limited hardware & space(depending on what you go for) but the processing power and stability will be top notch.
