what to do with caseing after harvest

After i harvest my caseing do i just patch and fill in the sides cause it srank. Also what is scratching , i have heard of it but can't find what it means.

scratching is taking a fork and scratching the surface to loosen things up, i would only do this if u have overlay,and yes patch the areas aroudn the sides where it shrank away
