    #418713 - 10/08/01 07:39 PM (23 years, 2 days ago)

Ive got a couple of random q's...

Do the big rubbermaid containers have an acceptable seal as to seal in humidity?

Does it matter if the light cycles AFOAF gives his cakes varies (i.e. 10AM to 1PM one day, 11AM to 3PM the next day, 5PM to 8PM another day...)

whats a good thing to birth cakes on besides thier jar lids?

Is sterilizing casing mix neccessary? how does one go about doing this?

thanks a lot, i appreciate it

I can answer a couple of your Q's:

How big is the rubbermaid container? Is it the one with the plastic hinges on it? Thats what im using and I find it better to cut the hinge/hooks off the lid and just let the lid sit there with some weather stripping along the rim.

As far as I know the light doesnt matter.. just give it a couple hours of light a day. It makes sense to give it the same amount of light they would get in a natural invironment. When they get that light doest matter.

Birthing cakes can probably be done on anything as long as they dont touch the perlite.. but I think i've even seen them on perlite.

Sterlilizing your casing mix.. well i guess it depends on what you're using. If you're using something with nutritianal value such as dung then yes you would have to sterilize it. But something like verm doesnt really have any nutrients in it.

I'm sure someone will have something to add on or correct me.

Yes

No

Don't know, I case...you should too ;)

No, but it depends what you are using. Coco (gro-brick) and verm are fine the way they are. I never used 50/50 so I can't say with that, but I wouldn't think so.

You can sterilize it like a jar of BRF in the PC, or you can pasteurize it by boiling at a low boil (150-160 F) for an hour. This keeps beneficial microorganisms alive (applies only to 50/50 casing)

I always sit my cakes on the perlite. I think the cakes abosorb the water better, because all my big shrooms come from the bottom. You do have to clean more perlite off the shrooms though.

Evil will always provail, because good is dumb.
