Theremin Players
    #4186235 - 05/17/05 01:37 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I was at my friends house a while back who plays the theremin and I was fucking around on it. That is one of the coolest, most difficult instruments to play. He's pretty good at it but he's been practicing for years. I gotta get me one of these, any other theremin players out there?

I've always wanted to get one. You can order them and build them yourself it takes about 90 dollars to get it I believe, hard to put together as well.

There's a film called Theremin about the inventor.

It's sort of a hemisphere with two antennae sticking out of it, which are emitting frequencies that you essentially bend by waving your hands around the two antennae. Rabbit in the Moon uses them, if you've heard of him.

'By using an alternating current of suitable frequency, tones of varying pitch are easily obtainable. A small vertical rod is used as the antenna. When the instrument is in operation, electro-magnetic waves of very weak energy are generated around this rod. These waves are of a definite length and frequency. The approach of a hand, which is an electrical conductor, alters the conditions in the electro-magnetic field surrounding the antenna, changes its capacity and thus affects the frequency of the alternating current generated by the apparatus. In this manner, a kind of invisible touch is produced in the space surrounding the antenna, and, as in a cello, a finger pressing on a string produces a higher pitch as it approaches the bridge, in this case also, the pitch increases as the finger is brought nearer the antenna.

Likewise the intensity of the tone can also easily be changed by a simple movement of the hand in space. For this purpose the instrument is equipped with another, in this case circular, antenna around which electro-magnetic waves are similarly formed. The approach of a hand toward this antenna causes a change in the degree of the intensity of the alternating current which produces the tone. Thus by raising the hand over the ring-shaped antenna the note sounded grows louder and by lowering the hand it grows softer, until it dies out in the softest pianissimo.'

I've seen Keller Williams play one too.

I believe someone from Led Zeppelin used to play one, might have been Jimmy Page. I'm almost positive that NIN uses one as well.

To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

You are correct sir, Charlie Clouser toured with NIN and used one.

probably the most popular use of theremin is the beach boys good vibrations
or 50s science fiction films

find some clara rockmore recordings if you are interested in classical virtuoso style theremin playing

my favorite band that has a theremin player is the polyphonic spree

i played a solar powered one at the liberty science center in nj and eeked out happy birthday but it was a lot harder than it looks. lots of fun tho

i played a saw once too and found that to be a lot easier.
