I would say grow some green onions. The flavor blows away the store bought stuff. But you should be careful, because that shit will take over your entire garden in like, 2 years. Its worse than dandelions.

An little herb section (not THAT kind of herb) is cool to have too, grow like, mint, parsely, etc. rabbits love this stuff though.

Ive got a community garden plot near home. Its 10 X 10 feet and I just grow herbs and sometimes corn.
Had that one for a while now.. Costs $15 a year. I dont tend it much, just go and clip my herbs from time to time and throw in bunches of seeds every now and then.

Im on a list to get two 15 X 15 foot plots next to each other and they already got a white picket fence around them with a stone path between them. They both got raised bed boarders and on one side a theirs a planters bench. I will get them in August for just $50 a year.

Community gardens kick ass.. They get water once a week and they have got the best soil for growing anything...

Ill start growing all sorts of shit this August.

A few courgette plants are worth growing, they produce all summer long. Also worth planting some purple sprouting broccoli, as the plot looks bare in winter other wise.

One small medicinal herb in a hidden corner, perhaps behind some corn, wont hurt surely
