BIRTHING THE CAKE (TRAUMA)
    #418422 - 10/08/01 03:56 PM (22 years, 1 day ago)

Has anyone heard of traumatizing (scraping, tearing, breaking a piece off, etc.) the cake on it's birthday,to increase the amount of pins.

I should also add that I use a non-casing method.

Yeah I kind of stumbled onto it by accident.I noticed what I thought might be some kind of contam on two spots on a cake, so I birthed it early and pinched off the two suspect areas (sprayed spots with dilute h2o2) and MOST of the mushrooms grew from those two spots.

That's pretty interesting actually. Maybe try some controlled experiments. I would but I don't grow cakes. I know with casings that scratching or brusing overlay works, and that pins seem to love small irregularites in casing surface structure. That is where most of mine appear. Hmmmm......

Maybe try a hard plastic comb with semi-fine teeth to just "agitate" the surface a little. Forks do alot of damage, the myc would prolly revert back to vegitative growth. Dipping the comb in IPA would be fine to sterilize it...just an idea...Good Luck
