Looking for cheap music? Try AllOfMp3.com
    #4179492 - 05/15/05 06:27 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

A friend a while back recommended I check out AllOfMp3.com so I did. It's a Russian based company that has got lots of music, and at 2 cents / mb you can't go wrong. About 10-20 cents per song on average. I payed about $10 for about 50 songs (sure beats paying a dollar a song like most music services), in 192kb/sec quality mp3 format.

There are no DRM's with these files, so compatibility/legal issues within players like WinAmp, Windows MP, iTunes, etc. is not an issue. Almost all songs can be downloaded in a myriad of formats and bitrates, for mp3 -- from 128 up to 386 kbs, and others, including a few lossless formats (which is not very cost effective, but nonetheless it's there), mp3, aac, ogg, to name a few.

I've been using it for about a month now, and I think it's great. I used to be a huge mp3 guru, but seriously, nowadays all I can say is fuck p2p networks, besides extremely crappy selection of songs to choose from, there are extremely variable download rates with p2p, too many damaged/corrupt files, viruses, and illegitimacy and the threat of the RIAA coming knocking on your door someday. On the contrary, allofmp3.com -- this site is 100% legal due to a loophole in the Russian Copyright Law. You're getting dirt cheap music, and you don't have to worry about breaking the law doing it. It has been thoroughly investigated by various third-parties and credible sources (google it to see for yourself) and it is legal to purchase music there and download(import) even for us Americans.

Anyways, all in all, it's a good service worth checking out if you're like me and want quality files, pre-tagged AND accurate ID tags, loads of format options, great download speeds (about 190k/sec using GetRight's 4-segment acceleration - a must, otherwise speeds are about 50k/sec), a very good and always growing selection, and are willing to pay just a SMALL price for all that. No subscription fees or anything, you pay a balance and download your heart away. And there are other cool features as well, check it out.

however, it's still illegal for RIAA mp3s in America. I prefer p2p.

I've been using it for about two years now. It's fucking great. I've put in 100 dollars over the past couple years and have gotten nearly 1500 songs. Let's say the average number of songs on a cd is 10 and the average price of a cd is 12 dollars. Roughly 150 albums times 12=$1800. That is one hell of a fucking difference.
I don't have to deal with unreliable download speeds of p2p either. Instead, I download at 350-450kbs. I highly recommend this site to anyone.

Does this russian company pay some of its income to the RIAA? If not, it still might not be totally legal. So if it isn't legal, you're wasting your money.

I think Morrowind is right. Is the RIAA getting any money from this site? If not, then this russian company is no different than when napster first came out. They're making money on someone else's product. Soooo....if it ain't legal, then paying for it is a waste of money, since its still not legal.

If I can download an album off of a Soulseek, and its not a "legal" version, and not pay anything, and you can download the same thing off this russian site and pay money for it and still the file is not legal, which one should you choose? Not a tough decision in my book.

It's not a tough decision if those are the only facts you look at. You can preview all the songs at all of mp3 before you pay for them, they have tons of albums, any bitrate and encoding you want, easy to search, and very fast downloads.

On the other hand, you could use a p2p program to find it, and get stuck with shitty bitrates, viruses, poor encoding, incomplete ablums, the chance you wont find it at all, slow/infinite downloads, and mis-named files.

I'm willing to pay an extra $1.50 for an album if it'll allow me to forgo all the usual BS that comes with downloading music from a p2p.

It is not illegal.  It is more complicated than simply "does the RIAA receive anything because if it doesn't it's illegal".  It has to do with whether or not its legal in Russia (which it is) and therefore importing it here would only be illegal if it were illegal there.  As a matter of fact, the RIAA does receive something because the company goes out and buys all these CDs and then encodes them, if you want to get technical.  Also, you're purchasing it "in" a foreign country, not in the USA for legal purposes, and then simply importing it.  Like I said, google it, and you will find that it is legal.  Reports have said the RIAA claims it is "illegal" but will not / cannot back its case, if it could then it would be, they might be getting fucked but that doesn't mean its illegal   It just exploits some Russian law thats going to take a few years to change, so take advantage of it, we shall.  A law suit was being considered and they decided to drop it due to various reasons, mainly that they had no case.

Don't take my word for it, research it yourself, but it is legal.
