who cares, just delete it. slavery was done away with back when Lincoln was president. These days primary and slave are set in bios & physically.

What operating system are you running & have you made any changes to your system (either hardware or software) prior to having this error?

What stage of the boot process are you getting this error?

it shows the Win 98 screen, then flashes blue and restarts.

it is a home made computer and I have made no configuration changes to it since it stopped working.

I am not familar with that file name "NTROS.EXE". I've researched it some but couldn't find anything on it. Is there any more info on the error it is giving you?
Is this a multi-operating system multi-boot configuration?
The file looks like it would be associated with NT File System but if it has Windows 98 on it would have to be FAT 32 or FAT.
Oh well, I would try to boot into "safe mode" (press F8 immediately after the post screen & select safe mode when the menu appears) first. If it boots into safe mode ok then you may have a problem with a driver, program loading at startup, virus , spyware, etc. If it does not boot into safe mode then you may have a system software or hardware problem (bad power supplies will cause a computer to reboot but they usually don't give errors, they just reboot) .
One more thing, you may want to check the voltage of your CMOS battery on your motherboard. Most of them are watch type batteries about the the size of a nickel & measure 3Vdc. If this voltage is low it could possibly change your settings to incorrect settings in your bios (incorrect settings in your bios can cause your computer not to boot properly) & your clock will start to lose time.
Try these things first & get back to us let us know the outcome

oh this box is fucked....

coincidently, any key required to reformat, such as page down(to get to the bottom of the agreement) or F8 to reformat, do not work. Neither do either of the delete keys.

Are you trying to boot off the hard drive or an operating system CD when you say "to get to the bottom of the agreement" because if your trying to boot off the hard drive there should be no "to get to the bottom of the agreement" & F8 will put you into the Safe mode menu. If you are booting off a windows 2000 or XP disc you do have to press F8 to accept the agreement before you proceed with the installation. Can you be a little more specific as to whether you are trying boot off the hard drive or the operating system CD & what operating system you are using.
Also, if you think you are having problems with some of your keys, can you try a different keyboard

That is the only reason windows xp owns win98; The blue screen for xp is rare infact almost impossible due to the architecture.

Even with system restore disabled (what I do for performance issues) the system still has exteme capabilities to repair itself.

Note: to fix win98 u need 2 things, a start up disk for win98, with config.sys set to load your cdrom drive.

You need to know dos commands

dir -list directories
cd -states current directory
cd.. -moves back a directory
cd x -x meaning directory, goes to that directory

edit is useful as well to search for files and edit files of course

It sounds like you have some stupid virus too me.

Viruses for win98 reside in (use edit to delete the line that contains the filename it is asking for).

win.ini (under C:\windows) under the first few lines
config.sys
autoexec.bat
