Oyster Mycobag, open or not?
    #4136878 - 05/05/05 09:22 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

well its this simple., i have a blue oyster mycobag that i birthed about a week ago with the puncture method and there are pins forming EVERYWHERE, probably more where i didnt puncture than where i did. all the little pins are getting smashed up in the plastic and there is a huge clump of pins growing right on top. my question is should i open the beast up and let the little pins breathe? i have a humidity tent and plenty of fresh air to give them. just wondering what the rest of you guys think.

There is always lots of pins. Many wont become any thing, but the ones that do find there wat threw the wholes. Will become beautiful clumps of mushrooms. By holes i mean i make x's about an inch each way. Taking it out of the bag aids in dehidration and smaller flushes. Plus picking from the wholes means you dont destroy the block when pulling the mushrooms off. A fully colonised block wont get contaminated easily eather way.

well its been six days since i opened the bag and here is what ive got so far. what do you guys think? it seems to be growing kind of slow but it is growing. the one mushroom that formed has been that size for two days. the large pins next to it formed before the mushroom and have still done nothing. you can kind of see in the back where many primordia have formed heads. does it look too dry to you guys? i mist 3-6 times daily, not directly on the cake but i mist the walls of the tent.

well a few days ago i noticed my oyster cake was almost bone dry. i dunked it overnight and set it back out with the humidity tent the next morning. i had to go out of townfor three days and when i got back i had this waiting for me.

LOTS of pins, but what i dont get is why they are all yellow, its a blue oyster cake. the first mushroom that managed to form was blue but as you can see it has since turned yellow. i'm not sure what to do about it. is it a humidity problem perhaps? i know they dont need as much humidity but how do i keep the cake from drying out? also is it possible to case oysters? i seem to have a lot better luck with casings. any info would be great, thanks

They need light. Can you arrange for some indirect daylight?

yellow means they are still dry. Give them a lot more humidity. The ones i grow have such a high moisture conten wjen you pick the mushroom from the block water squezes out like a wet spong.

well i came home yesterday and found the pins yellow, i removed the humidity tent and allowed more air flow and the pins which have developed since i got back are blue. there was a lot of humidity in the tent when i got home so im thinking maybe the old pins got too much humidity. there seems to be a split opinion on wether or not oysters like high humidity. so now i'm misting directly with the tent on only loosely
