absolutly neccessary for me... they won't break up otherwise, nor even reach 50% colonization if not done immediatly after pressure is released
oops, meant from, not in... i can't let them cool or the expanded wbs just forms a brick that won't colonize or break apart

"How does everyone else who does it this way (add water & dry WBS in a jar & PC)deal with this?"
You need to soak for 12 hours, then strain it out for an hour, THEN PC.

The problem is that you're cooking it in the PC. It will always turn sticky as hell if you do that. It MUST absorb the water BEFORE it goes in the PC.

just now remove a batch of jars (WBS) from the autoclave and they shook up really easy. i just soaked them (WBS) overnight before i jarred them up and autoclaved.

i have the same problem only i used a moisture of WBS and long grain brown rice and sterilized it on the stove. so far there has been 3 jars that got contaminated and two that are all most done. they have taken a ridiculously long time to colonnaded since the 18th or 19th of last month. i have no clue how there going to turn out, this is my first attempt

Peace, D
For quart jars I like to mix 2 parts wild bird seed, 1 part large vermiculite, and 1 part water. So 3 cups would be 1 1/2 cups bird seed, 3/4 cup verm, and 3/4 cup water. I fill my jars like this then let them soak for 12-24 hours, no simmer, and pced for 60 mins. I shake my jars before putting them in the cooker and right after I pull them out. I have found this recipe to work just right for me. In the end maybe 1 out of 12 jars will be a little clumpy. Help this helps.

ok this question comes from noob z help's founder ninja. how much does wbs expand? i like to do quart jars and use the -200 -400 -600 -800 measurements on the sides. i used to work heavily with wbs but kinda got out of the loop because of contam issues. thats why i told hippie to do this experiment to see what ones contaminated easyer than others to make the wbs tek more SOLID. my problem with wbs was usualy overly wet jars. a tip on breaking the jars up. get a nice and fat phone book or 2. i sugest 2, slam the fuck out of the jars onto that. like "im gonna fucking breka this jar" type slam. that breaks out the wbs nicely. back to the measurement thing. i think i was filling my jars to -200 thru -350. then soak only in jars. then id take a pillow case. id dice it up with skizzaz into little squares. put a square over the quart jar, then put the THREADS only over the pilow case then flip the jar and shake to hell. the pillow square would dip down, then i would press it up into the wbs to help it drain. when it was as dry as it was getting, id remove the square viola NO MESS! the problem with this is i think it was too wet. i think if i was to do this again id add 1/4 cup dry wbs and shake it to shit then pc it for 90 mins. can someone work this idea out since ive quit cultivation of mushrooms. work on this thread guys, make it archive worthy!

soaking is a waste of time. the same water content can be had by just simmering. i worry not of endorspores, the pressure cooker sterilizes everything. i do very large batches and i never have contams.
