Polypropelene plastic containers?
    #4181597 - 05/16/05 11:06 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Has anyone had experience using Polypropelene plastic containers before? I'm on a bit of a budget and these are particularly cheap and have no shoulder.

I've just pressure cooked one with the container's lid slightly ajar for an hour at 15lb with no distortion in the plastic at all, except there was a rather strong plastic-y smell when I took the lid off completely.

Does anyone know if this smell is going to stop mushrooms growing? Has anyone had any sucess growing mushrooms in polypropelene plastic containers? Should I stop messing with plastic and just buy glass jars?

Thank you in advance for your information,
Nightfall.

i do not use plastic for any food stuff i would personally feel the same for my mushrooms. plastic more so when under heat releases fumes. if you leave a plastic chunks in a glass jar in the sun for a week and measure the chemicals released into the air of the jar you would not use them either...that is unless you like that

tradenmar what do you use for fruiting chambers? something plastic. i agree with you about them in the sense that heating does release toxic chems, so i dont cook anything with them. otherwise use away just dont heat them up to the point of gasing off.

I use the plastic jars from myco supply and those worked out great for me.i tried the rubbermaid containers and i hate the lids for the reason they don't stay on very good. those look like they have a solid top so it should work pretty good for you.

I use microboxes which are made of the same stuff, you should be ok. Be careful with presure release deforming it tho. (I never had any smell on my microboxes tho)

Some work well, some don't. Just depends on the ones you have, or can get.....then test them.
