Fear and Loathing Hunter Interview
    #4175947 - 05/14/05 07:37 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I have the Criterion Collection of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which, among other things, includes an interview with Thompson (2002) throughout the entire movie, where some girl, I believe the producer or such, talks to him. They digress off topic quite a bit, and Thompson makes a lot of weird random noises, but one of the most interesting parts was when she asked him about Leary.

In response, Thompson said Leary was one of the worst things that ever happened to the 60s. He said that Leary was an FBI informant who turned people in, and that Leary was just doing a bunch of bullshit to mislead the eager youth.

He also talked about how when Leary was 18, Leary said he either wanted to be a priest, a soldier or a cop, and Thompson was talking about how Leary was so misguided in life that he was just bringing others down with him as he got older.

In other words, Thompson really hates Leary, and says the 60s would've been much better without an informant, a snitch and a useless bullshitter like Leary.

In fact, the whole interview's interesting, I highly recommend the Criterion Collection if you like Fear and Loathing.

What's the little monologue in Fear and Loathing about Timothy Leary, righ before he mentions something about how if you get on top of a hill in Los Vegas and look west you can almost see the high water mark?

Rubbish.

I admit that the situation with his semi-narcing on the Weather Underground was messed up(no one was arrested as a result of his information), but there's no way he worked for the FBI. The best thing he could have done for the FBI was to disappear from the public eye forever. He did not do that.

Sorry Hunter, you're way off on this one.

I read some of the FBI Leary documents... pretty detailed, at least the parts not blacked out with marker....

His name is Learyfan. Look, it's been brought up time and time again, but he's not about to think a single bad thing about Leary.

and what do you think of this critical point :

"What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel. "

Agreed. His opinion on anything to do with this subject is null.

He didn't take anything down with him.

He's saying the hippies were blindly optimistic. They had every right to be optimistic until the government started really cracking down. LSD would have facilitated a step up in human evolution, IMO.

Honestly, I don't know the entire situation, and I imagine no one does other than possibly Leary and the FBI. Thompson must've spent 5 minutes or so just talking about his disgust with Leary, even though I don't know how much of it is actually true, but that Leary had his daughter put his pot in her panties to cross the Mexican border and then she got caught, how he was a snitch, etc. The Weatherman narcing part is the only part that I know is true, and that itself is fucked up for supposedly one of the idols of the 60s.

Hunter also talked about the Leary-like idea that acid should be taken in the company of an experienced tripper or psychologist, and said that his way of dropping acid was to eat it and then go mingle out with the public.

Too bad Hunter's gone, he truely was a unique man.
