Agaricus Augustus?
    #4111676 - 04/29/05 03:36 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I've found a patch of what I think is agaricus augustus on some fresh wood chips in a garden. They seem to fit the description on Mykoweb, but I want to be sure, and even then I'm not sure if I'll eat them. It would be cool if I could, though.

The cap

The gills (mature)

the print

The mushrooms are growing separately on new wood chips in the Monterey Bay Area in California. They started showing up about a month ago. The caps are very light yellowish whitish with lots of light brown scales, getting darker in the center of the cap. The caps are dry and tough and have large cracks. They're very small and ball-shaped at first and get flatter as they grow. There is a large white veil that covers the gills entirely until you take it away. The gills are pink at first and then get darker with age. The stem is thick, white, smooth, woody and solid and also pretty short, and it has a ring. The spore print is dark brown.

It's rained a bit recently, but the shrooms started coming up during a dry spell.

The only thing that's different about the ones I found and the pictures on mykoweb is that the stems on mine are very smooth, rather than scaly, so it might be a different species. Any thoughts?

*edited because I forgot to add the gills are free*

What's the aroma? They look like dried augustus to me.

They smell nice, a little sweet, very mushroomy.

Sounds like augustus to me. They have the best smell for a mushroom I have ever encountered.

I agree with Joshua, fresh young augustuses? even trump chantrelles in my book. Sometimes the aroma can be weak on more mature or dried-out ones, but come back during a saute. That almondly smell. . .damn.
From the cracks in the cap, it looks like the flesh bruises yellow; is this true in the stem?

Agaricus are among the more difficult mushrooms to identify accurately to species. While they resemble Agaricus augustus, there are several very similar species that they could be. On the positive side, the sweet odor means that you are very unlikely to get sick from eating them. Agaricus cause a lot of stomach upsets, so eat only a small amount (less than 1/8 of a teaspoon) the first time, well cooked. If you don't get sick overnight then you won't have any problems.

I agree that A. augustus is one of the very best edibles. Of course, that's why the common name for them is "The Prince".

Happy mushrooming!

I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow before I can get some stem pics, I'll add them then.

Could you please list some of the lookalikes so I can check them out?

Okay, checked out other Agaricus species, and it could possibly be:

Agaricus pattersonae, but I don't think so, no red staining on the inside.

Agaricus fusco-fibrillosus, but I don't think so, the shape is too flat, mine are very round and ball-shaped when they're young.

Both of those stain red, and mine doesn't, so I'm pretty sure it's not those.

Just one off the top of my head...

How about Agaricus amicosus?

Incidentally, I wouldn't place too much confidence in the apparent roundness or lack thereof of the species, or of similar characteristics. Staining is a reliable character.

Part of the problem is even finding a good list of all the species of Agaricus. There are a *lot* of them and I don't know where such a list is to be found.

Happy mushrooming!

Okay, got a stem picture. Sorry it took so long, all the mushrooms shrivelled and it took awhile for new ones to come up. There's no scales that I can see and the stems also look way shorter than the ones on the pictures of Augustus. There's a very thin peel or something covering the stem, too. It's been partially pulled away. The stem itself is about two centimeters long.

Sorry about the crappiness of the pic, had to use my scanner. But as far as I can see, no scales. Are there related edibles with stems like this?
