St Georges Mushroom?
    #4178651 - 05/15/05 04:20 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Found what I beleive to be Calocybe gambosa (St. Georges Mushroom) today.

Cap 5 - 10cm diam, convex with a wavy inrolled margin, white to pale buff brown, smooth. Gills crowded, white to cream. Stem white, thick, 8.5cm long. Flesh thick, white, with a strong non mushroomy smell (could be mealy, not sure what meal smells like though :/) Spores white. Habitat - found on a roadside.

I phoned a local mycologist I kind of know and he said he's been picking Calocybe gambosa recently.

I'm a bit worried that they could be the deadly Clitocybe dealbata as they have a white spore print and can grow at the same time of year..

Any ideas guys?

They sound right, but you should probably find somebody local who knows them who could look at them and verify what they are.

Incidentally, Clitocybe dealbata is only very rarely lethal. The toxin, muscarine, causes extremely unpleasant symptoms that usually result in an emergency room visit, but it is actually treatable, unlike most mushroom toxins.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the info.

The mushrooms were kind of dried out due to lack of recent rain so I've thrown them out.

I'll probably go out picking this weekend and if I find any more I'll pay my mycologist friend a call.
