Tequila Aficionados Unite

Tequila: Nectar of the Blue Agave Tequila is produced in Mexico under by very strict government regulations. It is not made from a cactus plant as many people think, but from the sap of a succulent called the blue agave which is more closely related to the lily plant.
Tequila has gotten a bad rap! Many people shy away from tequila because their experience with it involved drinking shots of something like Cuervo Gold. This is not to say that Cuervo is bad tequila by any stretch, they are #1 for a very good reason. Gold tequila can be harsh if you are doing shots with a hot burn on the way down that makes some people gag (to put it bluntly). As you know, bad first impressions can have a lasting effect and some people will completely avoid tequila because of it. Take some time to educate yourself about the different tequilas out there and you will be quite surprised. When you stop shooting tequila that should be in a mixed drink, you will probably discover a whole new appreciation for it.
Tequila: Four basic types. There are four basic types of tequila.
Blanco Tequila "White" tequila also referred to as Silver, Plato, or Plata. Blanco is un-aged tequila right from the still without any exposure to to wood. It is typically clear with a very distinct blue agave flavor.
Gold Tequila Also called Joven or Abocado. This tequila is Blanco with colorings and/or flavorings added. It is best used for mixing in drinks like Margarita's.
Reposado Tequila Blanco that is aged for at least 2 months and up to 1 year in oak casks or vats. The aging process mellows the tequila and adds flavor and color.
A?ejo Tequila Blanco tequila that is aged in smaller amounts for more than one year. These are the Cognac of tequilas and should be sipped.
Tequila is not made from cactus juice! Contrary to popular lore, tequila is not made from a cactus. It is made from the pineapple-like heart (or pi?a) of the Blue Agave (Tequilana weber) succulent, a member of the lily family. The Blue Agave takes about 8-10 years to mature to the point where it can be harvested by the Jimadores for use in making tequila.
If you don't see 100% De Agave, it isn't. Ordinary tequila must be made with at least 51% blue agave. It can also contain colorings and flavorings to make it appear aged. This type of tequila is usually used for mixing in drinks and is typically cheaper than 100% blue agave tequila.
100% blue agave tequila must be made from 100% blue agave juices. As you saw in the above classifications it can vary in color depending on how it is aged. How can you tell if the tequila you are looking at is 100%? Look on the label. It will say 100% DE AGAVE or 100% Blue Agave. 100% blue agave is generally more expensive than ordinary tequila.
What's with the worm in Tequila? At some point the makers of mezcal put a worm in the bottle as a marketing gimmick. Tequila doesn't have a worm in the bottle and the worm that is in mezcal doesn't have any mescaline or hallucinogenic properties. [Mushrooms take care of that department, as I'm sure we all know. ]
My boss at work happens to be an old rich Mexican, and knows his Tequila. Before I talked to him, I always favored Patron as the No. 1 Tequila.. Me, him, and some co-workers were discussing tequilas, and he brought up his favored choice: Don Julio Tequila.
And ever since then..
Don Julio is the DON of Tequila.
Don Julio ranked No. 1 Tequila on Cocktail.com: http://www.cocktail.com/tasting/tequilasipping.htm
Tequila, it's still the ultimate liquor to do shots, with lemon and salt, of course.

I like silver the best, its my favorite hard liquor.
About the worm in mescal, did that tradition start as a way of proving the stuff had high alcohol content? (high alcohol=preserved worm)

Gee, Quervo is not on the list, i'm shocked.
Tequila is my favorite of alcohols. I've not drank many kinds, and as it stands now Casadores is my favorite.

Patron anejo is what I was drinking last night, I did at least more than 8 shots.. and no hangover. Indeed it IS like water.
Had I done this with, say, Cuervo gold... I could have a massive hangover, sick as hell, unless I diluted it with water-based liquids.

I love tequila!
Luckily its one of the few liquors I didn't severely abuse in the younger years and can still drink occasionally..

Holy shit.
My boss recommended some Tres Generaciones anejo tequila, which is made by Sauza, the first and foremost Tequila makers in history.
So I bought some tonight to try it out.
Holy SHIT.
It is smooth as fuck. I took a sip straight from the bottle, to taste it...
Wow.
Even Patron has a certain sting that comes on very slowly as it goes down.
But damn, this Tres Generaciones is fucking HONEY!

Close to 40 dollars. Don Julio/Patron/HerraDurra anejos are closer to 50 dollars.
One of the reasons my boss recommended Tres Generaciones was because of the exceptional quality/price balance that it offers.
It's amazingly smooth as silk. I'm still surprised at how much it beats Patron. I was always wondering why my boss wasn't too fond of Patron whenever I brought it up. He IS Mexican, and knows his shit, so to speak.
Don't get me wrong, any Tequila out there in the $40-50+ range is going to be good, overall.

Both, depending on how fast I'd like to get drunk. But overall, I enjoy the salt-licking-tequila-shooting-lemon-sucking a lil more. It gets you drunk alot quicker, and it's very tasty too.
Right now, I just started sipping it, and will probably move onto doing shots. But the thing is, with Tequila as smooth as this, the salt and lemon isn't all that necessary. When you drink Cuervo gold or the like, you're going to need salt and lemon. It's still a nice taste-addendum, either way though. Basically, the "stingier" the tequila is, the more likely I'll do shots w/ lemon&salt; the "silkier" it is, the more likely I'll sip/shoot it straight.
That's one of the nice things about fine Tequila. It's the best liquor to shoot, AND sip at the same time, IMHO.

Yes, as opposed to say, margarita salt, which is bulkier. Table salt is normally what bars use for tequila shots. But it's not anything written in stone, of course.. if you wish to use pebble-salt for melting snow, go for it.

Too bad most liquor stores close at 9 p.m. eh,?
How gay.
But at least Safeway and other Mega-grocery stores sell quality beer and such for 24 hrs. And then the liqour stores open back up at 10 am... Tequila time.

Ahh Patron. I had a bottle of Patron Silver for my 21st with 2 others. We all took the bottle in 5 minutes or so. VERY smooth. I've never had a tequila fuck me up like that.. nor go down so smoothly. It's worth the 40-50 or so bucks for this beautiful drink.

I've had the Patron Silver, and I agree, it is quite smooth...
But have you tried the Tres Generaciones? Let me know if and when you do try that...and compare the smoothness of the both.
But if you're standing from a Tequila-purist point of view, then yes I understand your affinity for Patron silver or any silver Tequila. The aged, anejo Tequilas taste closer to Scotch, whereas the silver Tequilas taste like pure 100% blue Agave Tequila.

I was going to make a thread about Patron, but I found this one. Love the stuff, and I suggest everyone try it. Had a bottle of Patron Reposado last night and converted 4 other people from Cuervo.
Im gonna have to find out if any of the stores around here carry Tres Generaciones. Once found, I shall report back with my thoughts.

I've heard all good things about it, but I haven't had some private time with it as of yet, I think it will be my next upcoming choice.
But y'know... from what I've read, Herradura is often ranked the best in the league of the supreme-tequilas, i.e. $300-400 bottles. They have their own brand called Herradura Seleccion Suprema...
Patron also plays in the $300-400+ range, with their Gran Patron Platinum Tequila, at $380.00:
Triple distilled, and at 400 bucks a bottle, you better sip and enjoy.
Even Jose Cuervo has their Reserva de la Familia Tequila, at $194.00
But that's the stuff that only the big boys like Goobler can drink and not go bankrupt.

The place I went yesterday didn't have Don Julio Anejo or Tres Generaciones, so I got Don Julio Blanco. Crushed ice + lime wasn't bad, but I'm not much into the blancos. A friend ended up coming through with a bottle of the Patron Reposado though, so we got royally smashed on both
