Hypochlorite treatment (aka bleach bath)
    #4177180 - 05/15/05 05:11 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

i was reading stamets' GGMM and was surprised by this alternative method of straw treatment, it is also cited HERE and basically it consists of soaking the straw in water+some bleach for 24 hors instead of the usual pasteurization method involving heat. it seems to me much simpler and more hassle-free than heat pasterurization, expecially for large quantities of straw. so my questions are basically three:

1) why is this method so rarely cited / used?
2) would it also apply for the tretment of straw + horsepoo?
3) would it also apply for the treatment of wood chips / dowels / sawdust ?

tried bleach 3 times with no luck. the bleach seems to lock in the water causing the straw to stay too wet for inoculation first the rye kernals germinate causing it to grow grass (straw) then a few days to a week later the green meanie moves in. (related to being to wet). I even tried letting it dry out 2 days after bleaching then innoculating it and still no luck. i dont recomend this mehod i find nothing works better than  hot water pasturization @ 160 to 170 degrees f
im also not sure about stagnent water sitting for 24 hrs. i would think the bleach would keep it clean but city water is clorinated and it tasts like shit if you leave it for 24 hrs.
i had no luck and imagine all that tried found poor results not worth repeaing. i too wondered this before trying so i tried it in small scale(thank god)

It's rarely used because it sucks. It's the high Ph that knocks back the bacteria and mold spores. Heat is much better, especially when coupled with lime to raise the ph.
